In the early 1800s, Cranston was a small town in Rhode Island. It was home to a few shops and businesses, as well as the only jail in the area. However, the town's biggest attraction were its tasers. In 1848, the first railroad robbery in Rhode Island took place when four men- George Atwater, George Fenton, James Baldwin and Samuel Clements - robbed the Providence Railroad. On July 10th of that year, Cranston was hit by a tornado which destroyed most of the town center. The tornado is considered to be one of the worst natural disasters in RI history. After the tornado, Cranston reverted back to its early days as a small farming village with about 100 residents. In 1907 cranston became an unincorporated part of Providence County and has remained that way ever since.
