In 1826, Dr. Samuel Morse donated his 16-inch reflector telescope to Cranston using money he had won from a bet with John Quincy Adams. This became one of the most well-known and prized astronomical objects in America until it was destroyed by fire in 1922. The Smithsonian Institution acquired Morse's telescope from them in 1922 as part of their collection of tools and equipment used by American astronomers during their exploration of space (the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory). The community has since managed its own observatory which opened its doors on October 26th, 1984 with a 14 inch reflecting mirror telescope arrayed over fields stretching across 4 acres at Brown University’s Fox Hill Campus located just outside Cranston! The Observatory currently maintains three 10” Schmidt Cassegrain telescopes as well as two 8x50 Binocular Scopes that offer stunning views of our Milky Way Galaxy!

Cranston, Rhode Island is a town in Newport County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 20,711 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest borough in Rhode Island and the second-smallest city in New England after Providence, Rhode Island. The name of Cranston comes from "cranberry" or "cranny". The first settlers to Cranston were Captain John Smith and his men who came overland from Connecticut on November 5, 1636. They named their new settlement for Sir Nicholas Inglefield who had given them a grant of land on Narragansett Bay for $2 per acre. The town took its name from Nicholas Crane who donated land to the town in 1702. In 1792, the General Court voted to change the spelling of Cranston to Portsmouth because they thought it would be more likely to be accepted by people living near Portsmouth Naval Yard which was then located in Portsmouth across Narragansett Bay from Cranston. The word Cromwell was also used as an alternate spelling for Cromwellsville until 1879 when that too became an official name of the City of Warwick RI In 1958, Cranston's water supply system almost went out due to construction work done by then Mayor Edward Jaffe on Browns Ferry Road. He ordered all residents not using municipal water during this time to boil their water before using it again. To this day there are still some areas where boiling is not allowed because of possible lead poisoning caused by old lead Service lines that still exist today
