Cranston is located in the Warwick, Rhode Island Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, Cranston had a population of 34,878. The town was founded in 1795 by General Israel Putnam and other patriots who opposed British occupation of the colony. One of the earliest business ventures in Cranston was importing goods from England to be sold locally. Consequently, today Cranston is one of only a few towns in Rhode Island which still allows firearms for personal use.
