The mission of the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island is located in Cranston. The first European to visit what is now Cranston was Giovanni da Verrazzano on July 4, 1524. He named it "Verrazzano's Village" after himself and his group of Italian explorers who had landed there two days earlier on July 3rd. Plymouth Harbor served as the site of some early experiments with firearms by Captain Francis Drake and John Smith while they were exploring what became Maryland in 1608-09. In 1795 George Washington visited Cranston while he was governor of Virginia; he recommended that the new government establish a military post at nearby Newport for defense against French forces operating in Rhode Island waters. The post was eventually established as Fort Adams (later renamed Newport News). During World War II, many American soldiers serving in Europe were housed at Logan Manor near present-day Warwick until their units were disbanded and returned home late in 1944 or early 1945. After hostilities ended all these servicemen left except for one man who stayed on to maintain order inside the barracks during peace times which lasted until 1951 when all barracks were closed down due to fire code violations by then Mayor James Fenton Jr., also an officer in the Army Air Forces Reserve who later served as City Councilman from 1961 to 1987 and as Mayor from 1990 to 1994.. In 1957, Interstate 95 was built through much of central Providence County connecting Pawtucket with Boston via Worcester and South Kingstown; however, continuation of I-95 past Pawtucket would not come until 1978 when another expressway was built through this part of town linking I-495 with Narragansett Bay - making Cranston one of only two towns along Route 95 betweenBoston/Worcester MA and points east throughout New England without its own expressway connection! A bypass route around downtown was constructed concurrently but never opened because funding could not be obtained--a fact which still puzzles planners today! In 1984 both houses of the General Assembly convened here following passage by referendum (see below) authorizing annexation by Providence County of portions lying southward including Warwick - giving us our current name! From then until 2003 our municipality boundaries coincided more or less with those used today within city limits although some streets extending into town beyond city limits have been given new names reflecting changes within our community since 1983! Recent annexations by Coventry Township (to the north), North Kingstown Township (to the east), West Warwick Township (to the south) have resulted in increased population densities outside city limits yet no change whatsoever to our municipal borders...a situation we hope will change soon! A referendum held on November 5th 1984 gave voice to popular demand for incorporation into a single larger municipality rather than continue splitting and merging each time an addition or deletion occurred within our community!! In response legislation was enacted establishing us as "Cranston Municipal Corporation" effective December 1st 1984!!! With that status came responsibility for all facets thereof from City Hall including but not limited to: planning & zoning; finances; law enforcement; streetlights; public services...all under one roof!!! And so began an eraof unprecedented success which has continued unabated since day one!!! Finally!! We are able to provide quality local services bordered only by farmland!!!!
