Cranston is a town in Rhode Island, United States. The population was 11,811 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of Rhode Island's towns and borders Providence to the south and east,Warwick to the north, and Bristol to the west. The first European settler in Cranston was Nicholas Baynard who arrived in 1663. He founded a small trading post on what is now Newport Boulevard. Baynard also built a gristmill on Narragansett Avenue in 1670 which ground mill flour for local merchants and sold it back to them. In 1714 an early church was built on Meeting Street; it still stands today as part of Cranston Christian Center. A school named after George Washington was opened in 1796 by Jonathan Wadleigh; it closed in 1827 and became known as Washington Academy School before being purchased by the Rhode Island School Society in 1903. During its early years, Cranston attracted people from all over Northeast Massachusetts because of its fertile land and convenient access to water supplies that allowed farming and manufacturing along with trade with other parts of New England. By 1800 Cranston had become one of the most important textile centers in New England due to its proximity to major rivers (the Narragansett River ran through town) as well as good transportation links via steamboats that connectivity made possible efficient production chains across much of northeastern America during this time period
