Cranston is a town in Rhode Island, United States. The population was 12,834 at the 2010 census. Cranston is part of the Providence-Warwick Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on the Narragansett Bay. The first Europeans to visit what is now Cranston were fishermen from England who landed there in 1635 and named it after their own port of London. By 1701, English farmers had come to live in the area and began farming corn, beans, potatoes and other crops. In 1768, Japan claimed Rhode Island as part of its new territory following its victory over Britain at Battle of Saratoga; this led to increased trade between Japan and Europe and helpedspawn several industrial plants in Cranston during the late 1800s including American Telephone & Telegraph Company (AT&T), General Electric Company (GE), Brown & Williamson Tobacco Company (B&W) and Bryant Rubber Company (BRY). In 1836, George Washington purchased land near present day Central Square for $2,000 which he used as his farmstead until his death in 1838. He bequeathed it to his son-in-law Thomas Jefferson Capps who made it into a gentleman's society called The White House Club which played an important role in American politics during that period. It would be another twenty years before anyone inhabited what became known as "The Bottom" due to lack of affordable housing available on the peninsula then known as Green Isle with only a few homes being built between 1840-1850 when Fenway Park was built next door by John Adams Fishbein Sr.. In 1865–66 James Fenton built a small mill on Water Street just east of US 1 for flour tortillas manufacturing but never operated commercially because water shortages caused by typhoons destroyed most mills along RI coasts during that time period; however Fenton’s Mill still stands today on Harbour Road overlooking Puget Sound! In 1898 RI Legislature created Town of Warwick outlying areas east/west of Pawtucket Valley extending upriver from Middletown southward including all or portions of modern Cranston Township northward including all or portions offrom Pawtucket Valley plus parts of modern North Kingstown Township westward reaching into both those townships! This act gave residents withinRW much choice about how they wanted their town formed without having to go through RW County!! It also authorized erectionof public buildings such as schools etc.–a unheardof provision back then! It remains oneofthe most important legislativelycreated local governments ever!! As people started settling down around central square starting with Reverend Abram Hickey founding The First Congregational Church there were many business concerns established here like JF Luskin’s blacksmith shop where shoes were made until 1903 when Luskin died suddenly leaving his shop unfinished; Pemberton Woolen Mills opened up here later providing employment for locals well into the 1920s; Captain Edward Winslow foundedFN Wagon Workshops here manufacturing wagons for cranberry picking operations(which continued until 1977); Harry Chandler opened his grocery store here in 1921 becoming oneofthe first retail convenience stores operating inside larger malls across RI adjacentto Interstate 195 during that time period; Government Printing Office opened its doors Downtown soon thereafter providing office spacefor various government departments throughoutRI while also printing internal documents needed by these same agencies outsidecity limits!Today Prudential Financial Corporation has their headquarters downtown along I-195!!!
