There are multiple stories of how the gun swivel came to Cranston, Rhode Island. The first story is from 1868, when a man by the name of George Haggerty invented and patented a new type of firearm that could be rotated 360 degrees. This allowed for easy target practice for soldiers in the Civil War. The second story is from 1903, when an American company named Winchester created and marketed a gun known as the “Winchester Model 1886”. This rifle was designed specifically for use in America’s wars with Spain and Mexico. When World War I began, Americans were desperate for firearms and decided to buy up all of the Winchester Model 1886 rifles that had been made available in Europe. During World War II, another American company named Colt produced a gun called the Colt Pistol which was used by both the United States military and law enforcement officers throughout America. In 1948, Cranston resident Arthur Ladd developed a new type of handgun known as the “Ladd Gun” which featured an adjustable stock and swivel drum magazine holder. This pistol was especially popular among police officers because it could be fired quickly without having to reload. After years of development and testing, Ladd’s product became available to consumers in 1951 under the name Colt pistols MkIII (left). Soon after its release, this pistol became one of America’s most favorite handguns due to its reliability and ease-of-use.

However, since 2000s Cranston has experienced significant growth thanks to several initiatives including new development along Route 1 and investments in education and job training programs
