At first, the city used blacksmiths to create a control box for each bulb, but this proved too difficult and time-consuming. In 1895, an American Electric Light Company plant was built on High Street near Water Street in Cranston. The company provided electricity to all of Cranston through overhead wires and power stations. In 1917, Cranston became part of the newly created Providence County. As part of this change, local officials decided that all streetlights should be powered by electric bulbs rather than kerosene lamps becauseelectricity appeared to be more reliable and efficient than traditional gas or oil lamps. By 1922, all lights had been turned off by order of county commissioners at night due to the high cost of replacement bulbs. Beginning in 1925, new types of electric lights were developed which allowed for longer life expectancy with less harsh lighting conditions than previous types. This innovation led to the introduction of fluorescent lightbulbs in 1969 which continued to be popular until replaced by LED (light emitting diode) bulbs in 2006

Cranston is a town in Rhode Island, United States. The population was 18,512 at the 2010 census. Cranston is located on the Narragansett River, about 20 miles (32 km) east of Providence and 25 miles (40 km) west of Pawtucket. The first permanent resident in what is now Cranston Township was John Winthrop in 1636. In 1795, James Wright built the first gristmill in what is now Cranston. In 1803, Colonel Nathaniel Hale purchased 2,000 acres (800 ha) of land south of the river for $2 per acre ($30 per hectare). He named his tract "Hale's Purchase", after himself and his brother-in-law General Nicholas Hillyer, who had played a leading role in helping to secure U.S. independence from Great Britain. The town began as a small cluster of houses near where present-day Webster Street and Union Avenue cross the river; by 1800 it had grown to encompass 6 blocks square with over 100 homes. In 1814–15, during the War of 1812, General Nathan Bedford Forrest led an attack against Fort Sumter which destroyed much of Charleston Harbor; as a result of this event most residents left for other parts of Rhode Island or Massachusetts before annexation into the United States followingward. By 1830 all but one house in downtown were burned down by British troops during their occupation; within two years all but 12 were repaired or rebuilt and business resumed as usual until 1861 when war caused widespread destruction including much damage to both buildings and infrastructure across RIUSA due to lack thereof being able to rebuild properly following devastation wrought by fire engine raids while fighting Yankees Cranston grew rapidly after incorporation as a borough on November 1st 1837 with around 400 residents living within its borders only 5 years later During World War II several mills closed because they could not compete with wartime production at munitions plants outside RIUSA such as Bethlehem Steel Company's Canonsburg Factory Center which produced more than half the munitions used in Europe during that time period On July 14th 1954 Cranston voters ratified an ordinance creating Councilmanic Districts throughout RIUSA giving each district 3 council members instead of just one
