Cranston is a town in Rhode Island, located on the South Shore of Narragansett Bay. The population was 21,971 at the 2010 census. Cranston is adjacent to Providence and Warwick. The first permanent settler in what is now Cranston was Nicholas Snelgrove who arrived in 1634. He built his house on what is now Park Avenue and named it for his patron saint, St. Nicholas of Tolentine. In 1785, John Potter moved to Cranston from Watertown and began to build a successful grocery store on State Street which he called "Potter's Store." Potter's Store became an anchor tenant in the downtown business district that exists today. In 1812, Joseph Fenton purchased land at present-day State and Park Avenues from Nicholas Snelgrove for $1,000. He laid out a grid system of streets that still surrounds the town today. This street plan soon became known as "Fenton's Plan". It remains one of the most important elements of contemporary Cranston life; it has been copied by many other towns throughout Rhode Island. In 1818, Samuel Slater settled on part of what is now State Avenue in Cranston with his family after leaving New York City for religious reasons. Slater had ambitions to establish a Christian academy in America but never accomplished them due to financial difficulties incurred during his travels there as well as during construction projects he undertook without proper permits or funding – an event that greatly disturbed many Protestants at the time).Slater later renamed this structure "Samuel Slater Academy" after himself and opened it up to students from all over America (it eventually evolved into Brown University). A few years later (1822), John Copley arrived from Manchester, England with his family and built a tavern called The Crown on Main Street which still stands today - serving refreshments until 10 p.m., long before such services were common in Rhode Island at that time! Copley quickly became known as "The Father OfRhode Island" for his many contributions to the community including creating roads, churches and schools - including Present Day Brown University! Cranston enjoyed its golden age during this time with new residents arriving daily and businesses multiplying like mushrooms; however things changed permanently when war broke out between the United States & Great Britain just prior to the American Revolution (the entire island went into lockdown mode due to fear of British Invasion). This caused economic hardship for everyone involved as goods such as food couldn't be transported across the ocean so prices increased significantly along with production values dropping precipitously; cranSTON'S economy would take another hit several decades later when more reliable transportation methods appeared starting around World War II finally restoring some semblance of normalcy back into its once tumultous affairs! During Prohibition efforts by Governor Smith Vesper beginning around 1920–21, much activity took place within our small town center where all manner of Black market activities occurred including bootlegging operations utilizing various techniques such as caching beer above roofs until needed then selling these containers directly off-road through areas such as West Market Square next door etc.; some people even managed secret underground storage locations while others simply stayed away altogether….. unfortunately too often law enforcement failed miserably at their constitutional mandate……..resulting not only immense social disruption but also numerous property crimes committed against innocent civilians who were caught unaware……….all culminating tragically with one night when approximately 60 individuals participated together in an illegal open air gathering celebrating prohibition accomplishments……………a typical example illustrating how impunity can lead not only To criminality but also public drunkenness & disorderly behavior

Cranston is a town in Rhode Island, United States. The population was 15,827 at the 2010 census. Cranston is part of the Providence– Warwick Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled in 1636 by Captain John Smith and his family, who named it after their home country of Cranstowe in England. The first permanent settler arrived in 1638, when Simon Legates moved from London with his family to found the town on Narragansett Bayou. By 1776, most of what is now Cranston had been developed as a seaside resort catering to wealthy New Englanders who invested in property and built mansions along Narragansett Bayou. In 1892, during the American Civil War, General George Washington's forces captured nearby Newport while besieging Portsmouth on Long Island; they then marched into Rhode Island through Cranston to gain entry into Newport without surrendering any of their munitions or troops. This event has been cited as one of the key reasons for giving Rhode Island its current name: "Rhode Island" comes from English "cranston", meaning "captain's port". During World War II (1939-1945), Cranston played an important role in supplying Allied forces with military materials and supplies near Pawtucket Airport; some estimates put the amount of material delivered there at over two million pounds (900 metric tons). It also became a popular tourist destination due to its beaches and casino facilities which were used by both Axis and Allied forces during World War II. In 1951, cranston annexed Fall River which made it one of only two towns in Rhode Island to have both cities within its borders at once – the other being Providence. As more people moved into central Rhode island over time, Fall River began struggling economically while cranston enjoyed rapid growth since becoming an independent municipality within RI proper – making it one of only a few places outside Providence that still has this arrangement today. Since 1975, cranston has undergone significant redevelopment consisting largely of new housing developments throughout downtown area with mixed use features including office space and retail spaces adjacent to various schools and parks as well as dedicated riverfront waterfront districts complete with shopping malls/markets/restaurants etc.. These redevelopments have helped spur economic growth within the community while improving public transportation options such as bus connections between downtown areas and various suburban neighborhoods located close by; additionally providing jobs for local residents across many different sectors including manufacturing/construction/services etc..
