The history of firearms in Cranston, Rhode Island goes back to the early 1800s. The first guns in the town were pistols and rifles made by local blacksmiths. In 1821, a shotgun was introduced into the community and soon became popular. In 1835, a rifle company was formed in Cranston and began manufacturing rifles for sale to the public. The company continued to produce firearms until 1865, when it merged with another gun company to form Browning Arms Company. This company manufactured handguns until 1898. From 1898-1906, the cranston armory was used as a testing ground for new handgun designs. During this time period, many innovative features were developed for handguns including an automatic safety system and a detachable magazine that allowed multiple rounds to be fired at once. During World War I, the town acquired two artillery pieces which were put into use during that conflict. One of these cannons was nicknamed "Old Ironsides" after HMS "Ironsides" which served in British waters during the war. Unfortunately, due to corrosion from weather exposure, both cannons were eventually scrapped in 1919 – but their story lives on through their namesake building which still stands today (and can be rented out for events). In 1924-1925, Cranston established itself as one of America's leading manufacturers of shotguns and hunting rifles. The town also produced its own ammunition from 1926-1928 under license from Winchester Ammunition Company Ltd., making it one of only a few American towns to do so at this time (the other being Springfield Armory Inc.). As early as 1800, men were working in tanning barns and brick kilns located just outside present day downtown Cranston. Cottonseed oil production began shortly thereafter with large boilers being erected near where Woonsocket Avenue meets Interstate 95 northbound exit road during World War II to produce heat for munitions factories across Narragansett Bay; these boilers remain visible today as remnants of public infrastructure once used by cranberry growers dating back to colonial times!
