Cranston, Rhode Island is a town in Providence County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 26,527 at the 2010 census. Its name is derived from the English word "cran" meaning "a type of young willow." It was incorporated on December 12, 1796. Cranston is located on Narragansett Bay and is bordered by Warwick to the north and South Kingstown to the east. The town has a total area of 18 square miles (46 km2). The history of Cranston begins with its incorporation as a small town on December 12, 1796. At that time it consisted of just over one hundred people living in ten buildings near the then-new Charles River waterfront. The first official meeting for Cranston took place on February 3, 1800 when selectmen elected John Davenport as Mayor and Ebenezer Augustus Gorham as Treasurer. In 1837 Cranston became part of Providence Township. As township grew larger it purchased land from individuals or companies who had holdings in various parts of Providence County. In 1916 cranston annexed Warwick which gave it an expanded borders to the south while retaining its independent status within Providence Township limits despite sharing waterfront property with Warwick and other townships within the same municipality
