After World War II, cranston grew rapidly with many businesses setting up shop here including Seagrams Gin Distillery (now Diageo), Walsingham Paper Manufacturing Company (now Lucent Technologies), Baxter International (later Kimberly-Clark), and Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.. However, this growth came at a cost with some neighborhoods becoming too noisy for residents or being older than they wanted to be; this led to an exodus of young people from Cranston during the late 1990s/early 2000s when much larger municipalities such as Pawtucket had more severe housing affordability problems which they could not solve without government assistance or outside investment. Alliance Defense Industries Inc., once headquartered here before moving downriver into Warwick County after 9/11,[1] remains one of RI’s largest employers with over 2,000 employees located throughout Rhode Island along three factories – two near Providence and one near Windham – that together produce tires for both military and civilian vehicles worldwide[2]. One reason Alliance has survived since 9/11 is that it does not rely on export revenue from US operations; instead it reinvest all profits back into its plants and marketing operations around the world.[3] With global competition making products cheaper everywhere else,[4], what used to be seen as necessary infrastructure investments like better roads may well become luxury items like private golf courses scattered throughout much smaller communities these days if we don't start building something new hereabouts
