The town of Central Falls, Rhode Island was founded in 1636 by English colonists as part of the Plymouth Colony. The area that is now Central Falls was first settled by Indian hunters and fishermen. By 1776, the population of Central Falls had increased to over 1,000 people. The town began to prosper through its trade with Narragansett Bay and other points north. In 1845, a group of capitalists formed the Central Falls Railroad Company to build a railroad from Pawtucket, RI to Central Falls. The railroad helped create new jobs and increase the town's tax base. In 1847, the Second American Civil War began and many residents relocated to Kingston, RI because of the war effort. After the war ended in 1865, centralfalls resumed its growth and became an important industrial center with a large number of businesses including mills, mines, breweries and chemical plants. Unfortunately, during World War II much of this activity centered around manufacturing munitions for Nazi Germany which led to significant environmental damage in what is now known as Third Ward Bottom. Following World War II there was rapid growth in services sectors such as retailing and health care but little development occurred in terms of housing or entertainment venues until after the turn of the 21st century when centralfalls experienced a resurgence in viticulture which has resulted in several new restaurants and bars opening up throughout downtown as well as some major renovations (e.g., renovation of Pinnacle Bank building).

The town was first settled by English colonists in 1636 as "Castleton" after the Castleton Plantation in Northumberlandshire, England. In 1793 it became part of the Province of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations; it became a borough in 1802 and a town in 1854. The town is named for Christopher Gadsden, an American Revolutionary War general who fought under Benedict Arnold at Bunker Hill and Yorktown. Gadsden's father had moved from Flanders to America with his family in 1635 and started working on an estate near present-day Central Falls. After fighting for General George Washington during the Revolution, Gadsden returned home to start a farm near his father's house in April 1775. He helped gain independence for Rhode Island by signing the Declaration of Independence on July 4 that year. Gadsden played an important roleduring the war as captain of HMS Prince of Wales (1779–84) and HMS Romney (1780–83). He also served as commander-in-chief of British forces on Narragansett Bay during Queen Anne's War (1704–07). AfterWARS he resumed farming until his death in 1800 at age 83 years old. A plaque dedicated to Christopher Gadsden reading "In memory of CogswellChristopher Gadsden who resided herefrom April 4th 1700 until November 8th 1800" can be found outside the Central Falls Library on Main Street

The first permanent European settlement in Central Falls was founded by Nicholas Negros in 1736 as an agricultural frontier town near where he owned land that included present day Central Falls During King George's War (1739-1744), General Edward Braddock's army invaded British East India Company territory but failed to reach Boston due to bad weather conditions at Narragansett Bay which hampered its advance into New England In 1764, during American Revolutionary War, Captain John Stevens of HMS Resolution anchored off shore of Central Falls with supplies for his troops besieging Newport News in Virginia while Lt.-Governor Samuel Adams commandeered USS Constitution for transportation purposes On February 2nd 1775 Lieutenant Colonel John Brown led a detachment of militiamen against a small force commanded by Major Benjamin Lincoln at Golden Hill near present day Greenpoint Avenue and Thames Street When Brown's men reached high ground overlooking the river they discovered there were no houses or other buildings above ground level so they began firing cannonballs into the night which woke up many local women who started cooking food over open fires before fleeing towards nearby homes hidden among tall trees before being pursued and captured by Lincoln's forces During this engagement some shots hit Lieutenant Colonel Brown who later died from his wounds at Great Orchard Hospital . Aftermath both sides claimed credit for killing Brown with only Lincoln getting away cleanly without any casualties
