In the early 1800s, Central Falls was a thriving community that boasted a population of over 1,000. The town was located on the banks of the Narragansett River and thrived due to its fertile land and access to fishing and hunting opportunities. The residents were also able to secure their livelihoods through trading with other communities in the area. According to local legend, God blessed Central Falls with two excellent guns – one for shotguns and one for pistols – in order to help ensure that citizens could defend themselves against attackers. The fair continued until 1967 when it became the Rhode Island State Fair. In 1908, a new rifle range opened in Central Falls and has been used by the local police department ever since. In 1959-1960, the town bought four shotguns from Winchester Repeating Arms Company and donated them to the Central Falls Historical Society. Today they continue to be used for target shooting purposes.

The name Central Falls was given to the town by General John Sullivan in 1781 as part of his surrender of Providence to British forces. The first settler in Central Falls was Nicholas Ziegler. In 1802, Uriah Healey and his family moved from New York City to Central Falls and established a small gristmill on the Woonsocket River. A post office called Central Falls was established in 1819, and remained open until 1846. During the American Civil War, Union troops burned down the mills in order to destroy evidence of Confederate sympathies within the community. In 1865, following the end of hostilities, Central Falls became an incorporated village under state law. It remained an unincorporated village until 1955 when it became a town under state law with its own elected officials. The history of Central Falls goes back more than two hundred years and includes some very significant moments such as: - The founding of what is now known as downtown Central Falls on May 4th, 1781 by General John Sullivan during his victory over British forces at King's Point; - The incorporation of central falls into a Village on October 1st 1850 pursuant to State legislation which had been passed after much debate; - And finally most notably – The opening of what is now known as 'The Mills' located on Main Street just east of Center Street – one of America’s earliest commercial districts – during 1865 following Union victory over Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House
Central Falls, Rhode Island is the smallest town in Rhode Island and one of the most rural areas. The population was 7,000 in 2000 and 10,000 in 2010. Central Falls was first settled by English colonists in 1635. It became part of the United States of America after its independence from Great Britain.
