Central Falls is a town in Rhode Island, United States. The population was 9,895 at the 2000 census. Central Falls is on the South Shore of Narragansett Bay and is part of the Providence metropolitan area. It is bordered by Cranston to the east, Warwick to the north, West Warwick to the west, and Coventry to the south. The village of Central Falls was first settled in 1638 by Samuel Maverick and his wife Abigail Greenough after they were banished from England for refusing to convert to Protestantism during Queen Anne's reign. They built a log cabin on what is now Mill Pond which they named after their home country – Canada. The Maverick family moved again in 1642 when Joshua White purchased land from Samuel Maverick for £300 sterling payable in goods he would deliver over time. White renamed his new settlement "Central Falls" in honor of King George II who had visited Great Britain that year and bestowed upon him an honorary title, "Earl of Carleton". The first mills in Central Falls were built by Nicholas Sparks around 1792 as a result of improved transportation connections made through Narragansett Bay and Canal Company roads which became available following British colonization of America. By 1800, two sawmills operated out of Central Falls with three others along Route 1 just outside town limits; these began produceen yarn (cotton) but soon switched to agricultural products such as cornmeal, flour and soapstone until discontinued about 1925. In 1802 John Head started manufacturing shoes at his mill on Bridge Street which became one of Rhode Island's leading commercial enterprises until its closing down in 1963 due to competition from more modern shoe industry centers across North America . In 1825 Amos Morse began operating a gristmill on SouthBridge Street which evolved into a flour milling operation that continued until its closure about 1960 also because it was unable compete with larger mills located further away thanks to newer technology advances . Central Falls, Rhode Island is a town in Providence County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 6,596 as of the 2010 census. Central Falls is the smallest municipality in Rhode Island by land area and has only 1 square mile (2 km²). Central Falls is located along the Narragansett River on the border of Warwick and Cranston Counties. The town began as part of what was then Castle Hill Township on October 24, 1768 when John Tryon sold 10 acres (4 ha) of his Manor to George Clinton for $5 per acre ($/ha). On December 22, 1768, Tryon conveyed an additional 20 acres (8 ha) to James Wadsworth. In 1800, the township was divided into two parts: one contained Central Falls and the other Warwick. The town charter was issued on March 14th, 1811. In 1824–25, Joseph Pavalier built a dam across the river at present-day Riverside Drive in order to generate power for his sawmill. The mill continued operating until it closed in 1865 because of low demand from mills in other towns around Rhode Island due to faster transportation times caused by railroad construction nearby. In 1898–99 local developer George Washington Smith opened up a new shopping center called "The Lakes" that included a department store and over 100 small stores within its boundaries including Bickford's grocery store which would later become Macy's Department Store. At this time there were no services or amenities available within walking distance so shoppers had to take buses or cars to reach their destinations. This led to development around "The Lakes", such as streetscape replacements with signage denoting bus stops near each store; today these areas are known as Park Street and University Avenue

The first post office was established in Central Falls in 1807. In 1848, the village had a population of 100 and it became an incorporated town in 1902.
