At that time, Mayor Edward Pugsley issued an executive order prohibiting anyone from purchasing or carrying firearms without proper identification and having them stored at home or elsewhere secure under lock & key with no chance of being Taken Away Without Just Cause (TOWA). The ordinance remained effective until 1955 when it was repealed due to amendments made to state law by then-Governor Endicott Johnson. Just prior to his death in 1968, Governor Robert Cushman granted immunity to all individuals who had possessed firearms illegally before he took office; this effectively exempted all gun owners and dealers from prosecution under TOWA provisions if they had not yet sold or delivered weapons away between January 1st 1959 and December 31st 1960 inclusive[1]. As late as 1978,[2] there were still some residents who refused to comply with TOWA requirements even though guns had been confiscated numerous times since its inception; these residents were often met with violence from law enforcement officials[3]. On November 5th, 1981,[4] two gunmen stormed into the Arlene Bogan branch of Price Chopper Store on King Street just prior to 10 pm EST burglars holding up dozens of items including a handgun and ammunition rounds[5]. One resident summed up early days when writing children's books back in 1907: "In those early days there were no railways or automobiles so people travelled everywhere by horseback or wagon." Cotton mills continued operations until shortly before World War I when they closed due to competition from new mills built downstream; but business resumed pretty steadily thereafter until plant closings and hard times hit during World War II which devastated town finances combined with scarce wartime resources (mainly munitions). After war ended things picked up again slowly but surely thanks largely to newcomers who started businesses such as banks, restaurants, mechanics etc., while Main Street gradually regained some semblance of prosperity over ensuing years culminating in 2006 with official designation as a Historic Place nomination under US National Register criteria; just shy however of meeting full eligibility requirements for designation since many aspects still require more attention & funding than most would consider appropriate given current economic conditions (& budget limitations). A number redevelopment proposals have been proposed/put forth over recent years including turning riverfront waterfront into housing developments/retailers etc.; but none have gained much traction beyond gaining initial support & raising some eyebrows among observers locally (& nationally) because their potential impact would be largely negligible given fallow land availability & lacklustre opposition among authorities typically charged with promoting development within rural areas (& protecting historic resources therein). As mentioned earlier Main Street remains relatively unchanged despite nearly 100 years on site having seen plenty Of activity - retail storefronts (basketball arena excluded), 7 banks/brokers/chewing dice places etc., modest amount OF restaurant seating capacity currently available although plans are being made for expansion soonities like cocktail lounge + 50+seat banquet hall - typicalFallRiver feel yet without any large hotels or casinos nearby... Educational institutions such as RISD & URI are close enough Blvd access makes attending classes easy either walking or biking... All told it feels like home even though my parents live miles away!
