The history of the gun hammer in Central Falls, Rhode Island can be traced back to 1802 when Captain John Stevens built a Custom House on the corner of State and School Streets. The first guns were imported from England and France, and the custom house was used as a shipping and receiving office for these imports. In 1804, Captain Stevens married Anna Maria Brown, daughter of John Brown, Sr. Anna Maria was born in Providence but raised in West Warwick. She came to Rhode Island with her husband in 1805 and soon started a family. In 1807,Captain Stevens erected a frame schoolhouse on High Street which he named after his wife. This building served as the town's first school until 1865 when it was replaced by Central Falls High School. In 1814, Captain Stevens donated land to Central Falls for an academy which would educate local children. The academy became known as Brown University after Governor Nathanial Brown gave it his approval in 1815. The university was founded with three buildings - the Chemistry Building (later renamed the Samuel AdamsBuilding), the Physics Building (later renamed the Allan HancockBuilding), and the Library Building (now known as Tower Hall). Captain Stevens died in 1840 and is buried at Greenhill Cemetery near Providence

Other prominent exports from Central Falls include potash and cornstarch products, as well as cheese and other dairy products.

The town was first settled by English Protestants in 1638 and originally known as Centerville. In 1786, Central Falls became a part of Narragansett County. It was incorporated as a town on December 12, 1814. The townspooner (a water-powered sawmill) that graced our landscape for over 150 years until it closed its doors in 1984 operated out of Main Street in Central Falls until 1978 when it moved to Warwick after being bought by Brown Paper Co., which also owned the Warwick paper mill. Finally, we must mention Union Carbide Corporation's Bethlehem plant which opened in 1984 and employed 4,000 people up until 2009 when it closed due to economic conditions across Northeast America including Chinese competition. In recent years much attention has been paid to Central Falls because of its rich history and unique architecture - many famous people who have lived or worked here include writer Alice Sebold, civil rights activist Medgar Evers and comedian Dave Chappelle - but there are plenty of other interesting stories to tell about this small town too! For example, one local legend tells of how two women named Jennie Didion (the author) came down from New York City with their children during World War II just in time for Victory Day ceremonies; they were driven away by military officials who thought they would be celebrating Japanese victory instead! It's no wonder then that so many businesses have come and gone over the years; indeed, even now there are only a few remaining original buildings left standing such as Main Street Methodist Episcopal Church (#7), which served as both residence #1 for local dignitaries like Mayor John Fenton (1910-1974)during his long reign as head official throughout various civic events like dances given at nearby Newport Castle#2 & 3&4&5&6&7&8&9(?), baseball games played at Tilton Park (#8), public meetings held outdoors at MWF House (now First Baptist Church), school functions conducted inside/outside McArthur gymnasiums throughout primary grades thru 8th grade (& occasionally 5th grade), plus special occasions like bicentennial celebrations or New England Flower Show!
