Central Falls, Rhode Island is a town in Providence County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 12,569 at the 2010 census. It lies on the South River in theProvidence Valley neighborhood of Providence. The site of modern Central Falls was first settled by Native Americans in 1638. The area now comprising Central Falls was part of the Narragansett Indian Nation until 1736, when it ceded its lands to England as part of the Treaty of Paris following the American Revolution. English settlers arrived in 1639 and began trading with their native neighbors. In 1647, Nathaniel Cushing erected a small log cabin on what is now upper Main Street in what is now downtown Central Falls. In 1689, General John Forbes built Fort Niagara near present-day Warwick for defense against French attacks along the Canada-New Hampshire border. At this time, there were no roads or trails connecting Providence and New York City; trade goods and passengers had to be transported by boat or ox cart across open water routes. During various wars from 1775 to 1815 (the War for Independence), militia units were raised and garrisoned at various points within and around Central Falls including Fort Duquesne on Narragansett Bayou (now called King's Highway) and Fort Brown on Main Street between Northampton Road and Bridgeport Avenue (). In 1818–19 an act authorizing erection of a school district passed both houses of Congress; but owing to lack of funds local officials decided not to erect schools until after statehood in 1829 – which they did without interference from central government authorities who considered all such private initiatives illegitimate under new state law). The first teacher taught school in Central Falls School District #1 on December 10th 1830 using twenty pounds sterling worth of curriculum materials provided by Samuel Morse! In 1834/35 three buildings - one house (northwest corner First Street & Bridgeport Ave.), another house (southwest corner First Street & Northampton Road), and a barn - were erected on what are now Second and Third Streets just west of wherepresent day State House stands today as well as two more ranches: One Ranch( northwesterly boundary off Third street east side) ran along Depot Rd., 4 miles long; Another Ranch(nwestern boundary off Third street west side) ran along Factory Dr., 3 miles long; This last ranch can still be seen today measuring some 2 1/2 acres NW/SE Corner 3rd St./Factory Dr.; A third building Masonic Lodge No 5 Griggs located south end First St intersection with Meetinghouse Rd also stood prior to removal during Hurricane Irene’s storm surge damage October 19 th 2017 . All these structures still standing today indicates that early settlement here was quite substantial given that land ownership changes over time did not take place without consequences for many residents .
Central Falls was first settled in 1639 by English colonists. The town was originally named Providence, but the name was changed to Central Falls after the falls of the same name. In 1876, the town became a borough and then a city. Central Falls is now a part of Providence.
