In 1807, Commissioners Act No 2 passed by Parliament granted township status to areas adjacent to cities or townships therein without specific approval from respective governing boards thereby creating MORRISBURGH - YORKTOWN TOWNSHIP - SARATOGA TWP - MONROE TOWNSHIP - CRAWFORD TOWNSHIP - ALEXANDER TOWNSHIP - NORTHUMBERLAND TOWNSHIP which incorporated most surrounding pre 1800 village names.. York is a town in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,362 at the 2010 census. The name comes from King George's Province of Pennsylvania, which was established in 1701 and included present-day York County. The first settlers to the area were members of the Penn family who arrived in 1681. A grist and saw mill had been built on the river near what is now downtown York prior to this time. In 1714, Anthony Wayne founded the village of Wayne outside of York on land that he purchased from Sir John Norris. On December 15, 1714, Wayne erected a two-story log courthouse and three other buildings including a barn and stable near what is now Second Street east of Market Square. In 1730, Jonathan Trumbull organized the township of Northumberland by combining parts of Westmoreland Township and YORK Township. On February 8th, 1746, Trumbull approved an act creatingpresent-day York County as part of his effort to provide more open space for farming in central Pennsylvania following the French and Indian War (1754-1763). A gristmill operated by James Neely located on Mill Creek west of where it flows into Beaver Dam Creek began production in 1825; however it closed its doors after only six months due to competition from bigger mills in nearby states such as Erie and Lancaster. The mill was reopened by Chauncey Davenport after he became president pro tempore (the first full term) of the Pennsylvania Houseof Representatives in 1829; however operations were discontinued again after only one year when Davenport died suddenly at age 54 from pneumonia caused by yellow fever pandemic sweeping Europe at that time! The next major employer in York during this time was Middlebrook Coal & Coke Company which began production on September 12th 1860 under new ownership with Isaac Asbury as President & Chief Manager; however production ceased due to lack of coal until mid 1870s when large amounts were found underground thanks to advances in mining technology! In 1840 David Sneath established Sneath’s Brewery which continued operation until 1865; however it is most commonly associated with its predecessor - local brewer Samuel Smith - which opened its doors on October 22nd 1830! This establishment produced over 1 million gallons per annum according to brewery records! On November 7th 1861 newly elected Mayor John Hennepin dissolved all township committees effective immediately upon taking office thereby abolishing their functions within their respective townships without any notice or meeting agenda! This action effectively terminated municipal government within these areas for over 60 years until 1984 when an act creating new boroughs within present day York County replaced township government therein! One significant development that took place during this timeframe was the construction along Second Street east of Market Square between 1875-1877 by entrepreneur Augustus Kelley who built several businesses including an ice cream parlor/cafeteria called The Fenton House opposite today's Mifflin Bank building! Notable events also occurred during this period such as General Edward Braddock's ill-fated Expedition against Pittsburgh (Major engagements occurring around May 4th 1755), Independence Day celebration held at Beechcroft Manor Mansion July 14th 1861 featuring complimentary entertainment provided by Colonel Hugh Mercer (a leading light among early settlers) followed four days later by Drayton Green’s famous “green jellied”speech delivered before a large assemblage assembled at Ferry Hall close thereto - Taylor’s Tavern being one prominent participant - followed seventy five days later on November 3rd when Lancaster county seat moved from Westmoreland to Yorktown concurrent with abolitionffrom neighboring Cumberland county seat there ! It should be noted that both Lincoln Heights – located about northeast corner First Street south side Main Avenue west thereof – then known as Easton Prior to 1800 had long been home exclusivelyto Quakers having met there since 1697 while portionsnowhere aforesaid belonged primarilyto Germans prior thereto !
