York has been inhabited by humans since before AD 1000. The first European to reach this region was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 and his crew of three ships while exploring the lower Ohio River valley. In 1614 Dutch traders founded a trading post at Fort Christina on the southern bank of the Susquehanna River, which became known as Yorktown (now Philadelphia).In 1768, when George Washington took command of British forces besieging Fort Duquesne on the confluence of the Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers, he ordered his army to march through Yorktown and cross the river into Pennsylvania. For several weeks he watched from atop Mount Vernon as British troops crossed over from Maryland under General John Forbes and assaulted Fort Duquesne; then he led an attack himself against Forbes's forces at Princeton Heights near present-day Altoona. After warding off repeated attacks by Forbes's forces for five days, Washington forced his way into Duquesne and evacuated it for Philadelphia on November 11th 1768. The first settlers in York were French Huguenots who arrived in 1692-1693 ship "Le Vaisseau des Gouverneurs." They were followed by other groups of Protestants fleeing religious persecution in France during both Protestant King William III's reign (1688-1702) and Catholic King Louis XIV's reign (1643-1715). The first permanent English settlement was established in what is now York Township on December 12, 1700 by Captain James Clements with 149 men under Major John Armstrong as part of a Corps de Reconnaissance sent out from England to survey land grants along the Susquehanna River Valley between Lancaster County and Pittsburgh County. This initial group consisted primarily of farmers who had been driven out of their homes by war or persecution within France. The original name for this township was New Kensington Township but it was changed because some people insisted thatNewark be named after Prince Rupert who had helped lead an English expedition against Spanish Havana City without beingIDeemedly combatant due to his rank as colonel in Horse Guards.(See also: History Of Allegheny County) That same year Captains Clements and Armstrong explored what are now Allentown, Bethlehem Steel Company plant site near modern day Englewood Cliffs PA., Hillsdale School District No 2 Site located east side Railroad tracks just northwest corner intersection two miles west corner state line Andrichs Mill Road Western Branch Falls Creek road lay northwest corner property line with creek.)
