York, Pennsylvania is a small town in York County, Pennsylvania. The population was 5,842 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first Europeans to arrive in this region were French and Indian traders who explored the lower Ohio Valley in 1682-1683. They found rich resources such as coal and iron ore on the Susquehanna River which led to their developing transportation routes across Canada and into east Pennsylvania. Englishman John Butler Settled near what is now York in 1765 after completing his failed attempt to find a route from Great Britain through the Appalachian Mountains. In 1787, he founded Westmoreland Township with other settlers along the Susquehanna River valley between Chambersburg and Allentown (now Erie). In 1802, when YORK COUNTY was created from portions of Allegany and Cambria counties, it included lands lying south of the Monongahela River including much of present-day Yorktown Heights and much of present-day East York Township including all or part of what are now Westmoreland Township, Northumberland Township, Clinton Township etc., constituting about one-third of YORK COUNTY's original area. When YORK COUNTY was organized on November 1, 1825 from parts of Cumberland and Lancaster counties it included all but one township then within Yorktown Heights: that portion lying east of Market Street between Broad Street (now Spring Garden Avenue) and Third Avenue (now Elmira Road), thence northwardly along Third Avenue to its junction with Second Avenue; that portion lying west of Market Street between Broad Street (now Spring Garden Avenue) and First Avenue (now Elmira Road), thence northwestwardly along First Avenue to its junction with Second avenue; that portion lying east of Market Street between Fourth Street (now Elmira Road)and Third Avelette (now Main streets), thence southeastwardlyalong Third Aveletteto its junction with Second avenue; that portion lyingwestofMarketStreetbetween FourthStreet(now ElmiraRoad)and Third Avenlette(now Main streets), thence northeastwardlyalong Third Avenletteto its junction with Second avenue; these three townships formed YORK COUNTY's core constituency until they were annexed by Allegheny County on February 15th 1901 pursuant to an act approved by the United States Congress known as "An Act for enlarging Consequencefully certain Townships in Allegheny County" (). The city limits reached back only as far as Fifth street althoughmuchofthecitywas laid out before 1800 according t o plans prepared by engineer Robert Morris .
