The history of York begins with humans who first set foot on American soil more than 500 years ago. The area that now includes York was first inhabited by the Lenape Indians, who lived there for thousands of years before they were pushed out by European colonists. The area that now makes up York was originally part of what is now Delaware County until 1795 when British settlers arrived and claimed it for themselves. At first, these English settlers behaved peacefully with their Native counterparts, but soon began to clear land and build homes. In just a few short years, this group had erected a small town named York on the site where they currently stand. In addition to its role as an agricultural center during its early years, York also played an important role in British history. It was here that George Washington met his future wife Martha Washington while she was visiting England at the time (1799-1800). Additionally, King George III visited YORK during his trip across America in 1794-95; this visit marked the start of British control over much of North America following their victory over France two year earlier. Over time however, English settlement failed to meetamorphose into an effective community due to several factors: 1) growing competition from other areas within Pennsylvania; 2) difficult terrain which made building roads and infrastructure difficult; 3) lack of support from local government officials which led to waning development efforts throughout the city’s early days; 4) low population density which resulted in little interaction between residents and local officials; 5) limited resources which led to minimal investment in infrastructure or development opportunities within YORK City Limits
