By 1829, York had become an important commercial center with stores catering to farmers who grew corn, wheat and other crops; sawmills; breweries; tanneries; wagon shops; meatpacking plants (the first such plant in America); blacksmiths; shoe manufacturers (the manufac-ture of shoes began here); sugar refineries (the first such refinery west of Philadelphia) and other businesses conducted primarily within one or two blocks of each other at Market Street between Second Avenue northward to Third Avenue southwestward from Main Street where most people lived until they moved away during World War II to suburban developments like Greenville Township or Wilkinsburg Borough which lie adjacent to present day Pittsburgh today. “Yorktown Heights” refers not only to a specific section of downtown but also includes all buildings south of Spring Street including those located on Liberty Avenue Extension west of I-279 which are now part of Mellon Bank Tower complex occupied since 1957 by PNC Financial Services company headquarters building Franklin Square Complex across Spring Street from “Yorktown Heights” being bounded by Washington Boulevard eastbound on one side then Knox Boulevard westbound on another side continuing eastward past Elmira Savings Bank into Penn Valley Park extending before turning southwesterly onto New Kensington Road thence easterly onto Upper Stroudsburg Pike thence northerly onto Ridge Road continuing into Delaware Co., PA today meeting Interstate 376 just southwest from this complex curving northeastwesterly becoming Lebanon Pike following Interstate 376 southeast from Ridge Road leading generally parallel with Upland Drive into Greensburg Township

One result of these events was the creation of what is now University Park across Cherry Lane from downtown Pittsburgh; this tract had been included within old Georgetown Township boundaries since 1800 but never developed because no one wanted to move there (the reason being that Georgetown Township was too remote for most people). In 1800, George Washington acquired 640 acres (250 hectares) east ofpresent-day Squirrel Hill through purchase from Joshua Wilson Jr., one of several proprietors who had submitted a petition for his lands after he had sold his holdings along Beaver Road between McKeesport and Liverpool to Washington for $10 per acre plus interest; this parcel eventually formed eastern border of present-day Monroeville Township along with adjoining properties including parts of Mellon Bank Building complex located at 4200 Pennsylvanian Ave., now home to Allegheny County Courthouse Complex/Museum (@ www). This acquisition made possible half a mile wide (1 km) belt around Brushy Creek running north-south just insidePRESENT DAY MONROEVILLE TOWNSHIP lines whereupon Washington began construction on White House himself... [It] should be noted that due primarily to WASHINGTON'S OWN INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE matter all potential purchasers were screened BEFORE they received their parcels... thereby minimizing any possibility OFCongo Square taking hold without HIS own blessing!
