York is a city in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 15,030 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of York County. The area around York was settled by English colonists in the 1730s and has been part of Pennsylvania since 1776. The first European settlement in what is now York County was made on November 5, 1733 when Capt. John Armstrong and his party set out from southwestern Pennsylvania with four carts to explore what lay beyond their original survey of the Susquehanna River valley. They named their new colony "York" after Yorkshire, England. Settlers arrived over time and several small towns were established before Lancaster became the capital of Pennsylvanian America in 1779 and select settlers resettled along Lancaster Creek (later called the Susquehanna River) which flows through present-day York City limits to form a continuous urban fabric for more than two centuries. In 1814, during the Mexican–American War, General James Ketchum's brigade invaded and sacked Mexico City; as a result of this attack on Mexico City Governor Nicholas Jones ordered militia forces from within York County to offer resistance against Anglo-Americans who had looted Mexican shops and homes across much of central Pennsylvania that week prior to Independence Day celebrations throughout New Jersey and Delaware beginning on July 4th - an event still celebrated each year by many in those states as "Ketchum's Raid." As a result of these events skirmishes took place between British regulars under Lt.-Colonel George Washington Hilliard and Yorkshire Militia near what is now downtown Yorktown (now Market Street), resulting in one man dead American soldiers driving off all but one Indian warrior armed only with bows & arrows who managed to take refuge among some houses before being recaptured without loss or damage American forces then burned all remaining buildings including the village square where they had previously attacked previous weeks later known today as "Old Stone Walls" located just east of current day First Avenue South). Prior to this operation most white Americans thought nothing could live permanently inside walls built by Native Americans so any vestige still standing today might have been scoured clean years ago!
