In 1861 during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewell's cavalry unit stopped traffic on YORK avenue near Forbes street and burned down two businesses before retreating into nearby Cumberland Gap National Park without losing any men or horses. During World War II Japanese forces landed at Point Pleasant Beach on September 14th and 15th 1942 while American forces were fighting ashore at Cape Girardeau Riverhead north of YORKtown - this event would also be recognized with an honored military cemetery spot within Point Pleasant Beach park today (next to US ArmyFort Monmouth). The town center was abandoned when JapanOccupied North Korea began bombings raids against South Korean targets inside and outside of their own borders starting on September 26th 1945 which led to over 1 million civilian deaths due to air raids throughout Korea that day alone including 600+ fatalities from ground firebombing alone...the destroyed infrastructure left behind by those bombings included no worthwhile construction projects for many years which contributed greatly to growing unemployment rates both inside and outside of town during that time... since then redevelopment efforts have taken place with some new buildings being erected around main square as well as several large shopping malls/stores popping up along I-376 corridor just south of town limits as well as numerous restaurant/bars etc.. YORK has been home to professional football teams since 1902 when local hooligans organized "The Pirates" who played their home games at Bellefonte Field located east off Market Street across from City Hall (now used for high school coaches' offices)...The Steelers became league champions in 1933 after defeating Cleveland 0-14 thanks largely to then Rookie running back Heinie Heitkamp who rushed for 137 yards on just 11 carries including a 64 yard touchdown run against top ranked but struggling Cleveland Colts...After World War II Steelworkers Union Local #621 merged with Teamsters International Local 538 forming "The Steelers" organization which continued play through 1953 season until disbanded after that year's merger with NFL rival Philadelphia Eagles...On November 10th 1955 Pirates player Charley Taylor died following a preseason game vs Philadelphia Eagles resulting in public outcry among fans angry about lack of safety standards among professional sports leagues during this period; ensuing investigations revealed widespread problems statewide with poor safety practices by major League Baseball players similar to those found within Professional Football leagues however nothing ever changed thereafter Despite these findings Several prominent members of both Professional Football and Baseball leagues met with Mayor John Connelly and politicians representing York Township regarding potential solutions including creating new stadiums or betterlighted playing fields within the community but no action was taken
