In 1853, Mr. John Atherton organized a volunteer militia company to protect settlers against Indian attacks during their cotton crops season. The town's first school was built that year on what is now Main Street. In 1856, Yeadon became a borough within Berks County and it retains its borough status today. In 1892–93 two new railroads were built through Berks County: the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad (P&R) and the Pittsburgh and Ohio Railway (P&O). These railroad companies laid track through town creating new businesses and residents along with some original buildings still standing today including Fourth Street Baptist Church which served as both a church and school until 1954 when it burned down due to code violations by local developers who had taken advantage of its abandoned condition while also using other buildings for their own use including apartments above ground level which are still visible today from Third Street eastward across Penn Avenue into Center City Philadelphia awaiting conversion into another apartment building project currently under way between Sixth Street SE & Seventh Streets NW in downtown Washington D . In 1907, the name of the town was changed to Yeadon Township. On November 3, 1930, the township was dissolved and its residents were merged into the new borough of Heckmanville.
