In 1800, George Washington stopped at Yeadon while crossing the Delaware River and was so impressed with its location that he ordered one of his generals to build a road through it from Philadelphia to New Jersey. In 1836, Isaac Blair founded Blair Paper Company in what is now the town center of Yeadon. The company became an important economic force in Yeadon until it merged with Bethlehem Steel Corporation in 1984 and then sold off its assets to Molyneux Coal & Coke Company for $1 billion. From 1904 until 1978, Penn Central Railroad followed through Yeadon on their mainline from Allentown to Yorktown Heights (now Yorkville). The opening of the Erie Canal made transportation much easier and allowed for more people and businesses to relocate to central Pennsylvania during the 19th century; however, industrialization commenced rapidly throughout most of Lehigh County during this time and many factories closed beginning around 1920 despite efforts by local communities to keep them open. Valley Forge National Cemetery opened in 1961 adjacent to Yeadon High School after years of campaigning by community members including Mrs. Betty Bolton (founder/owner/director emeritusof Valley Forge Museum), which led ultimatelyto construction of a $5 million cemetery complex that includes a visitor center, restaurant/barbecue park, gift shop/gallery/, amphitheater/, 200 gravesites/, library/(Mr./Mrs.) Jane MacDonough’s home), theatre(20 feet wide x 100 feet long interior with proscenium arch), playground/(2 acres plus 2 football fields)and new science wing which contains an exhibit about lead poisoning among other things as well as classrooms for middle schoolers through high schoolers/. When shopping along Main StreetEager Beaver Creamery owner Mary Knox happened upon two boys walking near her store looking for milk when she took them into her creamery for ice cream cones - they were her grandchildren Jerry (Jerry Shannon) and Danica Shannon-(EdnaCurran).
