Wyomissing is a borough in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It covers an area of 8 square miles (20 square kilometers). Wyomissing is part of the Wilkes-Barre– Scranton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Wyomissing was George Brown who arrived there in 1798. He built a cabin on the Susquehanna River and named it after his home country, Britain. George Brown's grandson James Fenton also settled in the area and built a large frame house on the present site of Wyomissing Hall in 1824. The post office called Fentonstown was established here in 1827; it continued to be used until 1931 when it was renamed Wyomissing. In 1829, Isaac Aspinwall purchased land east of present-day town and began construction on what would become Aspinwall’s residence which still stands today as one of the most prominent structures in town. That same year, he donated five acres (2 hectares) to build a public school which remains Wyomissing’s current school district headquarters to this day. In 1830, Drinnon Wirtz moved from Lancaster County to settle near Aspinwall’s property and opened a dispensary for native Americans under the name “ Indian Stationopathic Hospital” which later became known as “ Wirtz Schoolhouse & Dispensary”still standing today across frompresent-dayAspinwall High Schooljust north of Center Street on Park Avenue.) In 1836, John Atherton bought some lands adjoining Aspinwall’s property and laid out an arterial street that still exists today as Main Street: Atherton Road ran alongside it for many years before being truncated at Route 206 about two blocks west of its original alignment near present-day township limits late last century by developer Edward Jourdain who replaced much of Atherton Road with new Development Boulevard making much more sense given residential development nearby since then) . Aftermath of American Civil War saw increasing demand for farmland within newly annexed western Luzerne County caused by Reconstruction efforts following America's entry into World War I – desperate farmers turned to eastern Pennsylvania for their needed crops despite state prohibition against slavery (the so-called "open range" policy).
