Wyomissing is a borough in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,895 at the 2010 census. Wyomissing is part of the Reading Area and is bordered by Reading to the south, Bethlehem to the east, and Allentown to the north. The borough was created on February 15, 1874 from parts of Allentown and Bethlehem. Wyomissing takes its name from William Wyomissing who settled there in 1798. The first post office in Wyomissing opened in 1827. The township of Wyomissing was organized on April 12, 1834 under a commission from Lancaster County. On November 16, 1860, it was merged into the Borough of Reading. The first school in Wyomissing was built in 1828 and continued operation until 1865 when it became a private academy for girls called "The Golden Horseshoe". In 1898 it became known as "The Academy", which operated until 1955 when it merged with nearby Bethlehem Academy to form "Bethlehem-Reading High School". In 1957–58 it became known as "Wyoming Academy" after then-Mayor John Fetterman bought out all remaining shares of "The Academy". In 1954–55 President Dwight Eisenhower established an Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) laboratory at Wyoming Academy which conducted research into artificial intelligence and other topics such as robotics; however ARPA's focus changed soon afterwards to space exploration after understanding that Wyoming had potential for this type of research. Today ARPA's former headquarters are located within WyomISSING limits on Easton Road just outside town limits where they continue to operate as part of Penn State University's Institute for Quantum Computing & Neural Networks (IQCN). According to the 2010 Census results, there were 5,895 people living in Wyomissing Borough: 3% African American; 91% white; 1% Native American; 2% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; 100% European American (of any race). Of these percentages: 3% were born outside America; 92% were raised here within America; 4% had some other foreign background (born abroad or naturalized U.S.)%; 1/3 were married inside America but outside their parent's native country/state/province etc.; 99% identify themselves with either English or American culture and language(s). The first white person to live in what is now Wyomissing was Captain John Smith who set up a trading post on the Susquehanna River. He and his family were the only Europeans to settle in what is now Wyomissing. In 1802, Colonel John Armstrong settled in Wyomissing and built a home called Armstrong's Grove. Armstrong was one of the earliest settlers of what is now Berks County. In 1814, General James Kapp established Fort Delaware at present-day Wyomissing and built a stockade around it to keep Native Americans from coming over the mountain into Pennsylvania. The fort served as an important military outpost until it was abandoned in 1815. In 1816, General John Forbes moved his army westward across the Susquehanna River and constructed Fort Pitt at present-day Reading while also building another stockade around it to prevent Native Americans from coming over into Pennsylvania. This fort served as an important military stop for American forces during the American Revolution. In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order 9271 which ordered all citizens of Philadelphia to leave their homes within 72 hours or be interned without trial or any form of compensation. This order caused great panic among many residents of Philadelphia who did not have time to leave their homes before they were evacuated. Within days, most of Philadelphia had left for other parts of America or been interned with their families behind. The town that we know today as Wyomissing began developing slowly after 1865 until finally becoming a full town on December 6th, 1889 when legislation passed by both houses of the Pennsylvania state legislature designated Wyomissing as its own local government under control of aldermen elected by popular vote instead of appointed officials like those previously mentioned. Today, Wyomissing is one of two towns located entirely within Berks County (the other being Scranton) and boasts an active community spirit that has helped make it one of the most vibrant places in central PA for businesses and residents alike!
