During this time, Williamsport became known as “The Hub” because it served as both center for government operations and as a flashpoint for local political conflicts between Whigs and Tories. In 1868, following construction of US 1 (now I-95) along portions of present-day Route 12 near downtown Williamsport – which increased travel options through town –the town's importance began declining relative to neighboring Bethlehem Township until it peaked in 1972 when its population reached 10,000 people living within three miles of each other. Since then however, poverty has steadily crept back into Williamsport while job opportunities have shrunk relative to those available outside its borders; making it one of America’s most deprived towns according to Forbes magazine’s 2017 report “America's Most Diverse Cities". Williamsport was founded in 1795 by Canandaigua, New York settlers. The town grew quickly and by 1800 had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1851, Williamsport was renamed Readstown after Samuel Read, an American politician who served in both branches of Congress from 1847 to 1853.
