Williamsport is located on the Susquehanna River and has a population of 14,351 as of 2017. The first people to live in what is now Williamsport were the Lenape Native Americans. The first settlers were Germans who arrived from Hesse in 1814 and built a log cabin on the banks of the Susquehanna River. In 1835, John Pugh bought land along the river and built a trading post known as "Pugh's Ferry". By 1840, there were about 50 German settlers living in Williamsport. In 1846, General Anthony Wayne founded what would become Monroeville because he wanted to create an area where soldiers could be housed without fear of being attacked by local Indians. On February 3, 1847, General Wayne called for volunteers to help build a road from Monroeville to Pittsburgh so that goods arriving at Pittsburgh could be transported directly here instead of having to transit through Greene County. This road became known as "the Wayne Road". On October 1, 1850, Williamsport was incorporated as a borough with a population of 2 adults and 6 children under 12 years old. About two-thirds of all transportation until electrification took place within town limits; therefore it would have been impossible for anyone other than township residents to use those services even if they desired so (see Electric Streetcar). In 1865-1866 more than 1000 men from Lackawanna mining district lost their lives when an anthracite gas explosion destroyed Hazelwood Mine No 1 nearpresentday Wilkes-Barre; this event is generally considered one of the worst accidents in American history.. Coal mining operations stopped abruptly around 1890 due to health concerns and environmental damage caused by mining operations; however some small surface coal mines continue today (e.g., Donnellstown). Williamsport experienced its greatest influx during World War II with many companies manufacturing munitions such as Ford Motor Company which moved production units across country including nearby Scranton/Wilkes-Barre but also many chemical plants such as DuPont which produced Agent Orange used by US forces in Southeast Asia . After 1945 many businesses left town for various reasons including retirements or relocation within larger towns throughout Pennsylvania following increased competition from Interstate 95 . However over time most businesses have come back and since 2000 Williamsport has had its own economic development corporation called Industry Park District
