Williamsport was founded on May 25, 1795 by Colonel James Wilson. The city was named for James Wilson's father, William Williams. The first gunsmith in the town was Johnrisk Wistar and his shop was located on Main Street. On October 18, 1814, General George Washington shot a cannonball off of Fort Pitt and into the river near present-day downtown Williamsport. The event is considered to be the beginning of the town's history. In 1829, Mr. & Mrs. Elisha Gray opened their store on South Fourth Street which became one of the most popular stores in Williamsport until it closed in 1974 due to fire hazard reasons. In 1834, Reverend John Jourdan began preaching at Saint Patrick's Episcopal Church on Market Square and soon after he had several congregants who desired pistols for personal protection instead of just for religious services On December 12th, 1835, Mr. Denton established a blacksmithy at corner 3rd and Market Streets with twenty-six forge horses used tomake cannons from iron plates that were then smelted down to create guns The first gunfight in what is now known as Pennsylvania took place at this blacksmithy when three Frontier Rangers were killed by Samuel Colt while they were trying to purchase some pistols from Denton In 1865-1866 Confederate soldiers came through Williamsport during the American Civil War and many arms were taken including six guns that belonged to Colonel James Wilson After the war ended local businesses gradually reopened but there still wasn't much business activity because people wanted more peace than war

Williamsport is a census-designated place (CDP) in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. Williamsport is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. It is located on the east bank of the Monongahela River and includes the village of Williamsport proper as well as several smaller villages and hamlets. The area that now makes up Williamsport was first settled by Europeans in 1778 when French Canadian colonists arrived to establish a trading post on the river's left bank. By 1802, a small community had grown around this location and named it after General John Forbespatrick who led British forces against Native Americans in 1801-05. Over time, other settlements were established in what is now Williamsport including North Scranton which served as its primary commercial center until it was annexed by Philadelphia in 1907; East Liverpool which became an integral part of town during Reconstruction; and finally South Park which became one of the most important nearby farming communities during World War II. Williamsport has seen many significant changes over its history including becoming an industrial center associated with numerous manufacturing companies such as Alcoa, Bethlehem Steel, Carnegie Mellon University and UPMC; hosting major sporting events such as the 1951 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament and 1984 US Open Tennis Championships; serving as home to two branches of Penn State University (the main campus lies within walking distance from town while Beavercreek offers access from Interstate 76); and witnessing rapid growth in recent years due to its position near Pittsburgh's aging infrastructure but also opportunities for development through annexation by neighboring municipalities. Despite these challenges, it remains an exciting destination for visitors lured by its rich cultural heritage, vibrant local community spirit and easy access to some of Pennsylvania's most beautiful scenery.
