Williamsport is a town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,918 at the 2010 census. Williamsport is the home of the now-defunct Williamsport Steel Works and also home to two colleges: Dickinson College and Carnegie Mellon University. The area around Williamsport has been inhabited by the Monongahela tribe since before European contact. It was part of Canada until 1783 when it became part of the United States as a result of the Treaty of Paris following the American Revolution. The first settler in what is now Williamsport was James Sweeny, who arrived in 1786. He built a cabin on what is now Middle Road and named it “Sweeny” after himself and his father-in-law, John Sweeny III. James Sweeny's wife died soon afterward, however, so he married another woman named Sarah Beall in 1787. They operated a small shop together until 1792 when they moved to what is now Main Street. In 1802 they bought land from Isaac Biddle for $360 dollars which they later sold for $2 million to William Pittuck Jr.. William Pittuck Sr.'s son developed much of this land into present day Williamsport Steel Works (later Penn Central Railroad). In 1814 Abraham Lincoln passed through this area on his way from Lancaster to Gettysburg during the Civil War; he stopped at Mr. Pittuck's farm on his way southward A post office was founded here in 1836 by George Witherspoon with the name "Williamsburgh". After Union forces destroyed most of Mr. Pittuck's property during Sherman's march through Pennsylvania in 1863, Mr.,Pittuck received just £50 worth of goods back from Union General Ulysses S Grant - only one third what he had given up originally! In 1896 Samuel Morse laid down wire over 100 miles long within three months while living at 6 North Market Street (now 4th Avenue) in Baltimore Maryland; this marks one record that technology has set aside for world trade: telegraph wires had previously crossed state lines unbroken by human error continuously stretching back 400 years! Additionally, Samuel Morse helped lay down telephone wire across America between Pittsburgh and New York City – making America communication superpower! One popular legend about Morse says that because he could send signals over water without being detected by naval ships or air patrols – like shamrocks – he may have been able to communicate with aliens! Today many businesses still operate out of old buildings dating back to prior industrial eras such as Ford’s Garage which dates back to 1903 and former Bethlehem Furniture which opened its doors in 1904! These firms are examples of how an industry can maintain its culture even after large changes occur within it such as within technology or business models!
Williamsport was founded in 1753 by John Williams as a small trading post on the Susquehanna River. The town grew rapidly and by 1800 it had a population of over 2,500 people. By 1812, the town had become an important transportation hub for goods moving up and down the Susquehanna River. Williamsport became an incorporated town in 1834 and was named after General George Washington. In 1855, the town erected a large brick courthouse which is still in use today. In 1865, Williamsport became part of the newly created United States state of Pennsylvania and its name changed to Williamsport Township. The township's first mayor was Elijah Boudinot. In 1907, Williamsport became home to the world's largest cheese factory when Eastern State Cheese Factory built a plant there. The factory closed in 1957 but left its mark on Williamstown through its architecture, products, and culture.
