Williamsport is a town in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 21,569 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest town in Lehigh County and home to the Williamsport Mall. The town was founded in 1790 by George Williams and named for him. The first European settlers in what is now Williamsport were Dutch immigrants who arrived in 1624. They named their new settlement "New Amsterdam" after their old country. In 1790, George Williams purchased 2,000 acres (100 hectares) of land east of Bethlehem on the Susquehanna River from John Armstrong for £600. He laid out a town square with two churches and 14 dwellings; he called it "Williamsport." By 1800, Williamsport had a schoolhouse and three stores: one operated by his son Isaac as an academy; one by Abraham Levi as a grocery store; and one by Nicholas Prentiss as a post office. In 1814–1815, slaves from West Africa were brought over to work on the anthracite coal mines near present-day Northumberland Township in Lehigh County. When the US Civil War began, many of these slavesdisappeared because they could not be taken back to Africa without being free forever. Many of these Africans became naturalized citizens of America through passage through Canadian ports such as Philadelphia or Montreal before reaching America for work on Union plantations or ships that sailed into British waters to pick them up and bring them across the ocean to slavery on American soil until they were finally emancipated en masse in 1865 when Ulysses S Grant was inaugurated president
