Williamsport is a city in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 24,592 as of the 2010 census. Williamsport's history dates back to 1795 when it was named for Colonel William Penn. The town was first settled by Germans and Swedes who built homes next to the Susquehanna River. By 1810, the town had a population of 553 people and became a borough in 1828. In 1846, Williamsport became part of the new Uniontown Township which included Allentown and Bethlehem. On April 20th, 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewell entered Williamsport from Northampton County with 1,500 men and set up camp at what is now known as Market Street near Third Street. After days of skirmishing and artillery shelling by Union forces under US Major General Ulysses S Grant (known as "The butcher of Petersburg"), Ewell retreated on May 15th with only 62 wounded men after his force suffered casualties numbering over 200 dead and more than 1,000 missing or captured. Over 4 months following the war's end on November 9th 1865 – just days after Union General Ulysses S Grant accepted an unconditional surrender from Confederate General Robert Ewell at Appomattox Court House – Uniontown Township was merged into Lehigh County along with all other towns in Lehigh County that did not secede from the United States during the Civil War including Williamsport Today’s skyline seen looking south towards downtown - this photo taken on October 8th 2009 shows warehouses still standing along Third Streetjust east of present day Route 22

Williamsport is located east of Allentown on the Susquehanna River and west of Bethlehem. The first European settlers in what is now Williamsport were James Williams and his family who arrived in 1784 from Maryland. James Williams had been hired by Thomas Pennoyer to help him survey land grant that he had received from King George III for his service as an officer in Colonial America during the Revolution. When Pennoyer died in 1785, Williams became headman of what would become known asWilliamsport Township. In 1812, John Duryea founded Duryea & Sons Brewery which remains a prominent business center today within boundaries of town limits. That same year also saw construction begin on what would become known asthe Susquehanna River Bridge which crossed over the river near present day Northampton Township while still being built under state jurisdiction; this created community development along both sides ofriver with businesses providing employment for many residents including farmers, engineers and builders throughout much of early 20th century." In 1868 when it was proposed that a railroad be constructed through village so passenger traffic could be handled more efficiently, local mills (which operated until after World War II) created a need for new housing stock so workers could live close to their work sites without having to commute long distances each day or night. This led to the founding of numerousresidential districts within current-day Williamsport - Shadyside Heights Park/South Side Development District; West Side Development District; East Side DevelopmentDistrict - all continuing until after 1990 when they were consolidated into one district undercurrent name: "Williamsport". Today's downtown core within current-day town limits was largely developed between 1930s and 1970s following industrial consolidation - though not all streets currently associated with that time period are surviving intact such as Main Street which runs parallel along both banks of Susquehanna River

The first settler in what would become Williamsport was John Hargrave, who arrived in 1784. He and his family were among the earliest white residents of what became Williamsport Township. The first school was built in 1812 and served as a public school until 1865 when it was consolidated with nearby Reading into one district under the name "Reading School District." In 1872, a group of men from Lancaster County founded the town of Allentown on land that had been given to them by George Washington. They named their new town after General John Sullivan (1756–1824), who had helped lead American forces during the French and Indian War and then served as Secretary of War under President James K. Polk (1846–1849). General Sullivan's Donation land included all of present day Berks County except for parts of Manor Township which were later annexed by Allentown. Allentown grew rapidly due to its location and good transportation connections; it reached its peak population size in 1880 with 12,000 people living there. However, industrialization began to take hold throughout western Pennsylvania during this time and Allentown quickly lost its importance; by 1930 it had only 3,000 inhabitants remaining. After World War II ended military service boomed: many soldiers returned home to start families but also brought their homesickness home with them as they enlarged their businesses and townsfolk increased social support networks through religion and neighborhood organizations such as Rotary Clubs%. As commerce expanded so did subdivisions; areas such as Beechwood Park near Center City Philadelphia were developed while other sections including Northumberland Park became bedroom communities for more affluent residents further southeast on I-95 between Harrisburg & Delaware Valley cities like Yorktown & Hazleton NJ etc .. In recent years however some developers have begun making an effort to revive older neighborhoods providing services like arts/ Cultural events year round along with new housing developments within walking distance or even minutes away from busy commercial corridors ..
