Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania is a town in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Wilkinsburg was founded in 1795 by Capt. John Forbes and his family when they arrived from Scotland on their new estate of Forbes Manor in what is now Allegheny County. The first store opened in 1801 in what is now the downtown area and became known as "The Mercantile Hotel". In 1814, Capt. James Alexander built a log cabin near the present-day intersection of Market Street and West Avenue to serve as the town's first courthouse. In 1836, commissioners proposed that the name be changed to Wilkinsburg after General David Wilkinson who had fought with George Washington during the American Revolutionary War. In 1865, Mayor Samuel Mather organized a local militia unit to fight against Ulysses S Grant's army during the American Civil War under command of Colonel John Fenton and Major George Armstrong Custer. The town proudly supported Confederate forces throughout the war until revert back to Union control following fall of Petersburg. After World War II ended, many manufacturing jobs were lost due to automation but Wilkinsburgh has seen recent resurgence with an increase in biomedical technology companies and startups such as Myriad Genetics According to 2000 census data, there are 603 residents living within one mile (1 km) of Wilkinsburg proper while another 1% live within five miles (8 km) or so of it including all parts of Monroeville Township which includes much of rural central Pennsylvania beyond Pittsburgh's city limits).
