Wilkinsburg is a small town in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The town was founded by Captain John Wilkins in 1792 and incorporated as a borough on April 15, 1802. The land for which Wilkinsburg was founded was acquired from the Allegheny Chain of Rocks Wilderness by Colonel George Washington in 1791 and purchased from the Susquehanna Company by John Wilkins in 1792. In 1802, it became a borough when it annexed the neighboring village of Easton. The first school in Wilkinsburg opened in October of that year. Reverend Ebenezer Wright taught there for one term before moving to nearby Westmoreland Borough to open his own school. Finally, on May 3, 1810, The Second Presbyterian Church erected its first frame building with room for thirty-six students inside and twelve students outside on terraced ground near what is now known as Pine Street – seat of government until 1898 when that office moved to downtown Pittsburgh. There were also private schools until about 1830; however these closed soon after because of high tuition rates set by state legislators during their investigations into education reform under Andrew Jackson's administration (1829-31). In 1825–26 subscription lists were sent out throughout Pennsylvania soliciting contributions towards erection of a new church at Martinsburg (now Harrisonburg), then only an agricultural community east of Gettysburg In 1827 subscriptions reached $1,000 and within two months had grown to $5,000 with sixty donors A committee led by Rev Wright traveled to Baltimore where they met with representatives from King George IV's court After much discussion among themselves they decided upon an original design by James McNaught excise agent for an impressive Gothic Revival style church dedicated to Almighty God with spires reaching up unto heaven . Construction began June 8th but due to financial setbacks finished November 12th . The cornerstone lay buried beneath scaffolding until recently when it was unearthed and placed back aboveground next to Rev Wright's old grave . Assembling the heavy stone took six men over three days while buckets circulated constantly lest any water seep away .. once completed it looked more like something out of a storybook than reality .. Inside there are words engraved on marble tablets commemorating each donation made including those who offered no money or contributed nothing at all .. On one wall is an intricate relief depicting angels playing music while Rebekah Parsons reads from scripture.. One can only imagine how beautiful this must have been seen during services given the modest surroundings
