Wilkinsburg is a town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first settlers in this area were some of the original Six Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy. One such group was led by Captain John Forbes and their leader, Chief Joseph Braddock. In 1769, Forbes and his men were imprisoned in Fort Duquesne for refusing to take up arms against their British oppressors. Theirs was not an easy life - they were constantly under attack from Native Americans and social unrest brewed among their followers since they could not serve in war without pay while living off hunting and Gathering resources which they had been forced to give up. Despite these challenges, over time many of these early settlers became successful traders and entrepreneurs who helped create what is now known as Wilkinsburg Township (partly included in Pittsburgh). It is named for George Washington Wilkins, an American politician who served as the 14th President of the United States from 1789 to 1793. The first settlement in what is now Wilkinsburg was made on November 3, 1800 by Scots-Irish immigrants led by Rev. Daniel Boone. In 1829, Wilkinsburg became the seat of District No. 6 in Lancaster County and until 1840 it also held sway over District No. 7 in Westmoreland County which lay to the east and included parts of what is now York County. During its early years Wilkinsburg was an agricultural center with tanning and coal mining operations among its largest employers. By 1860Wilkinsburg had become a manufacturing center with mills producing cotton clothing, hats, shoes and other items such as cigars and tobacco products. Steel production began in nearby Scranton during World War II but soon ceased due to lack of resources; however local businesses continued to produce war bonds even after the war ended. In 1953 Wilkinsburg became part of the new metropolitan area that included all of Harrisburg proper within modern-day Pennsylvania; it remained an independent municipality until 1967 when it joined Pittston Township into Pennsylvania's newly created municipalities system under statehood provisions enacted during the 1960s Civil Rights Movement referendum process (Shawnee Mission Indian Community v Virginia). On December 12th 1976 residents voted overwhelmingly (by a margin of nearly two-to-one) to rejoin Pittston Township as a full member municipal unit within Pennsylvanian government structure rather than remain an enclave within Harrisburg proper where they were effectively second class citizens subject only to state laws governing official development within their own boundaries (Pennsylvania Constitution Article XIV Section 9).
