The first Europeans to arrive in what would become Wilkinsburg were French colonists who built a fur trading post on May 24, 1682 on land that now forms part of Mount Lebanon Cemetery. From this outpost, tradersSoldiers and Adventurers ventured out into what would become Lehigh Valley—now central Lehigh County—to sell their goods and meet new friends. One such trader was Captain John Smith who met with Indian Chief William Penn at Kittanning Creek on October 10, 1688 while exploring what is now Springettsbury Township. Penn offered Smith three grants totaling 2 mi² (km²) including present-dayMount Lebanon Cemetery where he built his summer home near where he currently resides. The town’s founder James Wilkinson spent much time during his lifetime travelling throughout eastern Pennsylvania visiting families whose ancestors had settled there before him; after his death in 1802 his wife Lucy donated land comprising present day Mount Lebanon Cemetery to be used as a public burying ground for her townsfolk and others nearest her heartbeats In 1849 work began on building a railroad through central Lehigh County connecting Bethlehem (now Philadelphia) with Reading (then Danville), making it possible for passengers/freighters disembarking at Easton (now Allentown) to travel onwards to Pittsburgh or other locations without having to go all the way downriver via Cumberland Gap Bridge crossings Sometime around 1870 local newspapers started printing called "Dayton Daily News" because it was located one block east of Main Street between Second Avenue North and Third Avenue South across from Dayton High School until 1906 when that building burned down leaving only street level remains today Some consider this event significant because it demonstrated how quickly Wilkinsburg could change hands due its location sandwiched between two large cities After years of construction only six miles long and four miles wide “the Lackawanna Railroad” finally reached Wilkinsburg Junction late November 1872 just days prior to Christmas when unusually high snow levels made traveling impossible even for horse cars
Wilkinsburg was a small town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. It was located on the Susquehanna River between Wilkinsburg and Monaca. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. In 1815, it became the seat of government for Lancaster County after its incorporation. The first permanent settler in Wilkinsburg was James Kapp from Yorktown Township in 1792. When Lancaster County was formed in 1795, Kapp and his property were included within the new county. By 1800, there were only about twenty-five people living in Wilkinsburg. In 1814, William Henry Harrison moved to Wilkinsburg with his family as part of his gubernatorial campaign against Andrew Jackson. He had come to support Jackson's candidacy because he believed that the Democratic Party would provide more protection for farmers than what the Republican Party could offer them. After Harrison's election as president in 1824, he signed a bill creatingWilkinsburg Borough Council which functioned as an administrative body responsible for providing services such as police and fire protection to the townspeople. The borough also possessed some independent powers such as authority over public land usage and zoning regulations which remained until 1967 when these functions were transferred to Monaca Borough Council effective January 1 of that year pursuant to an act of the PA Legislature entitled "An Act To Consolidate And improve Certain Rural Municipalities." The borough is one of six municipalities within Lancaster County which are considered part of the Greater Philadelphia area by law while they maintain their own governing structures including elections and budgets separate from those of Philadelphia municipality
