Wilkinsburg is a small town in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,857 at the 2010 census. Wilkinsburg is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The town was founded by John Dickinson in 1795 and named for him. It was first settled by Germans and then by Scotch-Irish immigrants who arrived in large numbers during the 18th century. In 1825, a group of thirteen settlers led by Captain John Smith bought land east of the Monongahela River and built a log cabin on what is now Ohio Avenue NW. The village of Wilkinsburg began to form around this settlement, with stores, a Methodist church and public square as its nucleus. By 1830, many residents had moved to what became downtown Pittsburgh when that city's Erie Railroad linkup station was constructed nearby. In 1847, following the Mexican–American War, General Ulysses S. Grant ordered all American forces to cross the river into Mexico and campaign against Santa Anna's Mexican army outside of Ciudad Juárez on account of fears that Mexico would attack US forces if it won control of Chihuahua Territory north of Texas (the territory had been acquired from Spain). As word spread about Grant's orders throughout western Pennsylvania, farmers began to exodus their fields towards Philadelphia in order to avoid battle or capture should they be needed back home; as a result of this migration more than 1 million people lived within twenty miles (32 km) of Pittsburgh at the time Congress passed legislation creating West Virginia Territory on November 3, 1848; much Of what is now Pittsburgh developed along Route 66 which ran parallel to Grant's march across country – making it one way for easterners to get involved in America’s Great Lakes region after escaping sectarian conflict back home! When Kansas became an independent state on January 29th 1861 following the Mexican–American War and US entry into World War I against Austria-Hungary two days later on April 6th,[2] President Abraham Lincoln called for troops from each state under his command (Pennsylvania included) to join him assembling at Cairo Junction near Pittsburg Landing for an invasion across the Potomac River which would cross south into Maryland before proceeding northeast through Gettysburg where we fought our last major engagement/battle leading up to our eventual surrender[3][4] On July 16th 1865 Union General Philip Sheridan ordered his cavalry charges onto Wellesylvania Heights near Petersburg while McClellan tried unsuccessfullyto rally his army there so he could Flanally drive them away downstream over Peakshill Mountain etc.[5][6] Although Union casualties were high (~30% killed or wounded), generals George Meade (+13%)and Sherman (+27%) achieved significant military successes resulting in Confederate victory over Union forces ending Reconstruction; thus endangering many slave states east of the Mississippi River such as Kentucky & Missouri who were not yet fully free! However some African Americans such as Booker T Washington & Elijah Muhammad managed To continue working & living predominantly among white people until well after reconstruction ended (& these men are often forgotten today)! During World War II most jobs were eliminated due to war production but local businesses including PPG Industries continued producing munitions even though production stopped completely in 1945 because there were no new weapons available anywhere else! For fifty years post-war growth has come mainly from retail trade with strong emphasis on health care services since Wilkinsburg shares borders with both Easton Township & Monroeville Township
