Wilkinsburg is a small town in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,818 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Wilkinsburg is located on the southern border of Allegheny County and is east of Pittsburgh. The first Europeans to visit what is now Wilkinsburg were French traders in 1753. They named it "Acre" after their captain, Pierre-Jacques Acre who had explored the region before them. The name stuck and from that time until 1827 when it was changed to "Wilkinsburg", the town's residents were known as "The Wilkinsburghs". The early settlers here were mostly Germans and their families arrived during the late 1800s as farmers and miners turned to industry in search of new land for their families and businesses. In 1907, a group of men from nearby Monroeville decided to start a post office in honor of General David Dixon who had been governor of Pennsylvania from 1802 to 1809 and again from 1815 to 1825. From then until 1951, when it closed due to decline in mail volume, Wilkinsburg had its own post office which functioned as an extension of neighboring Monroeville until that time In 1865, steel magnate Andrew Mellon donated land off Mount Washington Avenue near present day Oakland Cemetery for what would become Mellon Park which today includes several dozen acres (80 hectares) of forested land across three streams - one forming natural borders with Monroeville and two others providing deep water waterfront access for recreational boating, swimming and fishing; also included was a model home designed by architect George Witherspoon which still stands today on Elm Street adjacent to Mellon Park’s centerpiece – a large lawnedged pool/diving hole - measuring 25 feet (7 meters) deep with a 10-foot (3 meter) surface depth inside 100 feet (.30 meters), flanked by two impressive stone retaining walls crowned by Corinthian columns reaching 25 feet (7 meters) high). Some of the most common holster types today are the IWB holster, the OWB holster, and the Kydex holster. There have been many different designs and types of holsters over the years. One of the earliest designs was a type of belt loop holster called a “buckle band” holster. This type of holster had two loops on either side of it that would fit around your belt loops. The loops would then hold onto your belts so you could carry your weapon appendix or outside your pocket. Another early design was called a “paddle band” holster which had three bands on each end that wrapped around your waistband (or else they would be held in place by studs on the bottom). These were very convenient because they allowed you to carry your weapon appendix or outside your pocket without having to worry about it coming loose if you moved. One company that made a big impact in the development of holsters was Colt Firearms Company. Colt Firearms Company was founded in 1857 by Samuel Colt, who created one of the first handguns ever, called the “Percival Model 1851 revolver” (which is still manufactured today). In 1860, Colt Firearms Company started making revolvers with what is now known as an IWB (inside-out) handgun HOLSTER! This innovation changed gun ownership forever because it allowed anyone to carry their weapon appendix or inside their pocket without having to risk losing it when they got up from their chair or left their room! The first mill was built in 1803 by John Crouse, who operated it until 1825. In 1827, George Armstrong founded Armstrong's Brewery here, which became one of the largest brewers in America. The town grew rapidly and by 1830 had a population of 10,000 people. By 1840, Wilkinsburg had become an important center for trade with surrounding counties and regions including Pittsburgh and West Virginia. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), many residents sided with Confederate forces over Union troops. Many stores were looted or burned during this time period; however, most of the damage occurred to homes and businesses not involved in military activity. After the war ended, Wilkinsburg slowly regained its former prosperity as a manufacturing center thanks to new industrial investment from companies such as Alcoa and Bethlehem Steel Companies. Additionally,Wilkinsburg has been home to several large universities – Butler University (1909), Penn State (1921), Temple University (1996) – as well as museums such as Carnegie Museum of Art (2005) and Schuylkill Valley Folklife Center (2006).
