Wilkinsburg (population: 12,000) is a small town in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is located on the Susquehanna River, about 15 miles south of Reading and 25 miles north of Wilkes-Barre. The population was reported as 11,811 at the 2010 census. The original name of the town was Northumberland. In 1795 it passed to Pennsylvania from Maryland and became part of that state's Lycoming County. When Lycoming merged with Luzerne in 1825 it became part of Wilkinsburg Township. The first store in town was built by George Forbes in 1827. The first settler to die in Wilkinsburg was John Pritchard in 1848. The post office at Wilkinsburg opened on December 1, 1830, and remained open until May 9, 1865; during that time it served twice as an outpost for the Union Army during the American Civil War. After Pennsylvanian independence from Great Britain was achieved in 1776, many farmers moved into this newly formed country and founded villages such as Easton (founded 1800), Ashtabula (1802), Westmoreland (1810), Lancaster (1822), Whitehall (1824), Millersport (1827), Hazleton (1829) and Kingston(1799). One reason for this exodus may have been difficulties encountered trying to get government aid when land grants were being established throughout western Pennsylvania which did not match what individual farmers could afford to pay for help getting started or expanding their businesses beyond their original farmsteads/settlements Under pressure from these investors seeking financial gain through new business ventures or acquisitions opportunities too costly or infeasible for them to overcome numerous setbacks including floodsings caused by heavy rains accompanying Indian removal operations some landowners sold their holdings also others abandoned agricultural activities altogether joining forces with friends or family previously farming while living elsewhere seeking refuge during times of peace or war offered safe haven from Tories/ Tories’ supporters hostile Indians & military occupation
Wilkinsburg was founded in 1787 by John Wilkins and his wife Anne. The town was named after General George Washington, who had helped drive the British out of Pennsylvania during the Revolutionary War. In 1824, the town was renamed to honor sir Isaac Newton Webb, a local politician and scientist. The population of Wilkinsburg increased from 100 in 1800 to 4,000 by 1860. In 1876, the town became a borough and in 1920 it became a city. The population of Wilkinsburg peaked at over 20,000 in 1930 but has gradually declined since then.
