On October 1, 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate general Jubal Early attacked Union forces under Federal Brigadier General John Aitken at Kelly's Ford nearpresent-day Rocksville before retreating back intoMonongalia County without fighting. In 1892, Electric Railroad Company lines started running through this town from Westmoreland Avenue to Monongahela Avenue and then along South Side streets to Yorktown Avenue (now Market Street). This company eventually became known as US Steel Corporation because much of its production took place in Homestead and othersteel towns across America including steel mills in Gary and Scranton PA before those companies merged with UNICOM in 1998. In 1955 when US Steel Corporation closed its plants in Northumberland Township & Clearfield Borough, most residents left for good - only a few remaining until 1995 when they moved back into downtown Wilkinsburg when US Steel Corp reopened its plant there also A large shopping mall has been built northwest of downtown just west of I-376 which replaced an older shopping center that had gone up around 1990s . Another large development going on is a new condominium tower being built by KPMG LLP just southwest of I-376 next to PNC Arena
Wilkinsburg was founded in 1795 by George Washington and his brother, James. It became the capital of Pennsylvania in 1799. In 1832, it became the seat of government for western Pennsylvania. The town was abolished as a city in 1898 and merged with Bethlehem to form the new city of Bethlehem.
