During this time period also saw the start of rifle manufacture with John Pritchard opening a rifle works on North Third Street which heoperated until 1840 when it was taken over by George Stephenson who operated it until 1865 when it was closed due to financial troubles. In 1868-1869 Samuel Colt opened a small arms factory adjacent to his Armstrong Arms Company on Market Square which produced revolvers and pistols as well as artillery equipment including cannons and mortars
Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania is a town in Lackawanna County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 12,836 at the 2010 census. Wilkinsburg is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. It is home to the Western Pennsylvania Wesleyan University and the Scranton School District. The name "Wilkinsburg" comes from George Washington's military encampment during the French and Indian War on July 10, 1776, about 2 miles (3 km) east of present-day Wilkinsburg. The first Europeans to visit what is now Wilkinsburg were Dutchmen who landed there in 1685 as part of a fur trade venture with Native American chiefs. The town was founded by James Peale in 1786 as a small trading post on land he had bought from the Monongahela tribe nearpresent-day Uniontown. In 1814, when Lancaster County was formed from parts of West Virginia and Pennsylvania, it included Wilkinsburg and became its official capital. In 1826, when Pittsburg Township was organized under state law, that township included most of what is nowPittsburgh but not Wilkinsburg; Pittsburg Township changed its name to Greenville Township in 1867 when it joined Greenville County). In 1825 John Fitzpatrick built his estate at Mount Airy which became one of America's foremost plantation owners after supplying sugar for New York City's new sugar refinery plants beginning in 1828. Despite these challenges, however, Wilkinsburg has steadily grown over time into one of America’s most thriving communities – home to more than 60 thousand people today who continue to enjoy strong economic opportunities thanks to its growing downtown district that is anchored by two major shopping malls (one located just north of town on State Street), several professional universities (including Mount Union University) and numerous other businesses and cultural attractions.
