Wilkinsburg is a town in Greene County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,442 at the 2010 census. It is the principal city of Wilkinsburg-Lebanon Borough. The first settler in what is now Wilkinsburg were two brothers named Nicholas and John Barclay who purchased land from the Lenape Native Americans in 1799. In 1819, George Washington and James Kapp called for troops to help quell a bloody Uprising against British rule in North America and five brothers from Philadelphia arrived with their father to join the fight. The battle that ensued was one of the largest ever fought in North America and left many dead on both sides. Afterward, many of the original settlers moved away as violence continued to be an issue between Lenape and white settlers. The area became part of Greene County when it was formed on November 15, 1827. In 1881, a school was built on land donated by Revs John Haddad and Samuel Latimer which served pupils until 1912 when it burned down due to an electrical fire accident while being used as a barnstorming venue by local football teams. A new school was built on this site in 1927 which still serves students today (Wilkinsburg Schools District No 1). In 1952, Wilkinsburg annexed Lebanon Borough so that its residents could more easily vote in statewide elections ( borough status did not expire until 1994). As more people relocated to Wilkinsburg over time, services such as water supply, schools and police became available only through neighboring municipalities or counties with which Wilkinsburg had contractual agreements; however annexation has created cross-zoning issues where services are offered only through certain blocks within WilkinsBURG limits rather than all around town. In addition to services that are exclusive to residents within borough boundaries (such as sewerage or trash collection), there are also separate service contracts with other municipalities/counties that provide various goods or services such as parks & recreation; public works; health care; etc.; however annexation has not yet resulted in these types of cross-zoning issues because those agreements have been renewed each year without any problems arise

Wilkinsburg is situated on the south bank of the Susquehanna River, east of Allentown and west of Bethlehem. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Wilkinsburg started as a small settlement on land grant from George Washington in 1799. The town was chartered in 1814 and named for General James Wilkinson who had fought in the War of 1812. In 1838, Wilkinsburg became one of six townships within Lehigh County to be organized into a " municipality." The township's first mayor was John Denny. On July 25, 1850, local residents voted to make Wilkinsburg an incorporated city; it was formally incorporated on November 8, 1850. In 1865-1866, work began on what would become known as Independence Hall which would serve as the seat of government for Wilkinsburgh until 1800 when Allentown became the official capital of Pennsylvania. In 1896-97 two floods caused extensive damage to property and businesses in downtown Wilkinsburgh; this event helped spur investments in flood protection infrastructure that continues to benefit the community today. One significant social change during this time period came about when women were granted voting rights by virtue of being citizens of municipalities such as Philadelphia through state legislation passed in 1876 (the Municipal Rights Amendment Act). This changed how municipal governments operated throughout much of America and led to increased activism among female citizens striving for their own voice within their communities - something that can be seen plainly across American municipal history from then forward! On April 15th 1916 Captain John A Cook sailed his Britannia liner USS Constitution onto dry land off shore at Fairmount Beach after grounding her while gathering salt water supplies off Delaware Bay - thus becoming America’s first cruise ship! After years spent fundraising efforts by various groups Captain Cook donated all final profits back to society including $8 million dollars which still stands as America’s largest gift ever given away directly to charity! This event also helped spark interest throughout America in cruising – something that has continued uninterrupted ever since! Itinerant performers like Sinatra and Dean Martin made their mark here with many recordings sessions taking place at local radio stations KWPN (AM) and WFIL (FM). Folk singer Woody Guthrie also performed some memorable tunes here along with visiting British royalty during World War II before returning home safely aboard USS Saratoga! Theaters such as Shakespeare Theatre Company opened up shop here during these years showcasing classic plays from all over Europe while dance clubs flourished alongside live music nights nightly due largely to advances in technology – both big league and locally sourced! Some might say that “the good old days” were finally coming back for downtown Wilkinburgh thanks largely to new entrepreneurs like Monica Lewinsky who purchased ground floor space at 425 Market Street shortly thereafter – marking just one example amongst myriad post-9/11 eras where economic stability has returned firmly back into our hands once again...
Wilkinsburg was founded in 1795 by John Forbes and other Scotsmen. The town was named for General George Washington, who had fought at the Battle of Yorktown. The first post office was opened in 1815. In 1824, Wilkinsburg became a borough. The population of Wilkinsburg peaked at 381 in 1920, but has since declined.
