After World War II, the growth of Pittsburgh led to an outsized increase in demand for housing within Wilkinsburg itself as well as outlying areas such as Monroeville and Easton which had also become increasingly urbanized during that time period. As a result of this growth, services like transportation (including streetcar service) became difficult or impossible to provide without putting pressure on already struggling budgets within municipalities like Wilkinsburg itself. Despite this challenge, however, members of the town council have worked hard to maintain some degree of cohesion despite their differences while working together towards common goals. Today, Wilkinsburg continues to be home to a large number of its citizens who are supportive of its continued growth and prosperity while also ensuring that all voices are heard during municipal decisions

Wilkinsburg is a borough in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. It was formed on February 15, 1869 from the merger of two other boroughs, Westville and Springdale. The population was 10,711 at the 2010 census. Wilkinsburg is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The townsquare is home to four blocks of pre-war commercial buildings that were once used by Luzerne County courts and are now used as City Hall and Borough Council chambers. The first courthouse in Wilkinsburg was built in 1856 by John Pyle and cost $5,000. The present building was completed in 1909 after a donation from James A. McKnight Jr., who also donated land for it. In 1865, when Wilkinsburg became a township under state control, it had a population of only 100 people; by 1870 it had grown to 1,500 residents. The first post office at Wilkinsburg was established on November 24th of that year; it closed on September 30th of 1897 due to low mail volumes but reopened on October 9th with newPostmaster General Jno Fenton as the first occupant. Many local businesses were founded during this time including Wistar's drug store (now defunct), Smith's restaurant (now defunct), and Bemis' grocery store (now defunct). In 1902 the railroad came through town; passenger service began running between Pittsburgh and Scranton on May 2nd of that year and continued until 1948 when all trains stopped running due to suburbanization in the Allegheny Valley region east of Pittsburgh. At one time there were six locomotives operating out of Wilkinsburg: three C&O Railroad series 4-8-0s (Zephyr II#2-4), two Pennsylvania Railroad series 7-8-0s (Lark #1&3 & #6), one Conrail Pere Marquette unit EMD GP6C#9663 (#2724), and one Erie Lackawanna Railway unit EMD SD9F#90160 (#2725). In 1907 an exposition center opened up at what is now Point Park University which functioned as a branch library for Wilkinsburg for many years before being moved to its current location downtown in 1970 when Point Park University became Penn State Altoona campus proper Wilkinsburg is located along PA Route 22 about 12 miles southwest of Pittsburg/Scranton via PA Routes 412 & 422 interchangeably leading into downtownPittsburgh
