The first settlers in what is now Wilkinsburg were German Protestants who came from Hesse and Bavaria in the mid-19th century. They built a log cabin on an outcrop of land that still stands today. In 1854, they organized a post office and named it for their new community. At first, the post office was open only to residents of Wilkesbury Township and the surrounding areas. However, by 1857, all inhabitants of Wilkinsburg had received mail here. In 1865 and 1868, local farmers founded two schools in townsite: one for white children and one for African Americans. These schools soon became major centers of education in rural Luzerne County; as a result, many people thought that Wilkinsburg had become too isolated to be viable as a town. But because of its location near several important railroads (including the Susquehanna River), Wilkinsburg prospered through the late 19th century and into the early 20th century despite occasional economic setbacks. During World War II, munitions production at nearby Bethlehem Steel helped keep Wilkinsburg alive during difficult times; nevertheless, most locals opposed American intervention in Europe and voted against joining Roosevelt's New Deal coalition government during his 1932 election campaign. After President Franklin D Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 which ordered American citizens living within three miles of Nazi Germany to leave their homes immediately (and effectivelyTurnedWilkinsburys into concentration camps), many residents returned home but few businesses reopened after 1945 due to lack of business licenses or permits from state authorities overseeing postwar reconstruction efforts Today much remains unchanged from when Wilkos burg was founded: its rolling hillsides with wide views towards downtown Allentown; its cobblestone streets filled with charming institutions such as churches (St John’s Episcopal Church dating back to 1796 has been designated as a National Historic Landmark); its tightknit community spirit fostered by generations of families who have stuck together since before there even WAS a town called “Wilksburgh”
