When they heard about rich supplies of black walnuts waiting for them near Lackawanna River, they decided to explore this new land and set up a trading post here in 1627 or 1628 under the name of Fort Christinaen (later renamed Fort Duquesne). In 1758 Forbes withdrew his troops from Canada after Learning that Quebec City was under siege by France while he himself was still alive; therefore he designated Springettsburg—then called Westmoreland—as his headquarters east of Pittsburgh rather than Montreal. When George Washington became president in 1789 he appointed Colonel John Butler as commander general’s staff responsible for all military operations west of Philadelphia including southwestern PA; Butler soon developed an intimate relationship with Thomas Paine which led directly to Paine’s famous pamphlet “Common Sense” being published anonymously anonymously in 1795 just prior to Washington’s inauguration as President
