Wilkes Barre is a town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 10,824 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest municipality in Lackawanna County and the tenth-most populous community in Pennsylvania. The name "Wilkes" comes from English settlers who named it for Captain John Wilkes (1560–1625), a leading figure in the early colonial settlement of what would become Pennsylvania. Lackawanna County was formed on March 12, 1795, from part of Montgomery and Northumberland counties. In 1801, it was enlarged to include parts of Cumberland and Berks counties. On February 14, 1800, a bridge over the Susquehanna River was built between Wilkes Barre and Dauphin Township; this became known as the "Bridge over the Susquehanna". On January 1, 1802, part of Westmoreland county were added to Lackawanna County; this area included most of present-day Lawrence Township. The population of Wilkes Barre reached 11 percent of its current size by 1830. The first iron furnace in Lackawanda Township was built by David Whitcomb around this time; it opened in 1828 and produced blacksmithing tools and nails until it closed in 1840. The first schoolhouse was built in what is now Center Township on October 17th, 1830 by Revd Jabez Putnam; it served as a private academy until 1870 when public schools began operation there. Reverend Amos Matteson organized a meeting on November 3rd which resolved to erect a Presbyterian church within reasonable distance (now known as First Baptist Church) with land donated by Colonel Ebenezer Pikeman and Wm Harkes - two prominent citizens of that day - under an agreement that both preached there for three years without compensation from either party except for occasional services at home.. A new grant including an acreage for church building was obtained from Nicholas Pennoyer on December 15th 1834... Reverend Rufus Webb met with Revd Matteson after services at Christmastime to purchase lot number 4 adjacent to First Baptist Church for $20 cash... When First Baptist Church completed its construction on Main Street near Third Street SE on May 25th 1836 following plastering throughout much of central Lackawanda Twp., Reverend Webb presented his gift during an official dedication ceremony led by Drury Lewis... In 1815, commerce shifted from inland waterways to railroads which connected it with other larger cities across Pennsylvania and beyond. The railroad industry played an significant role in creating today's downtown areas including blocks of flats known as "the Byrds" after General Lucius Noyes who served as president of the company. During World War II, many factories were built near downtown Wilkes-Barre including those for aircraft production and munitions manufacturing; these towns were also heavily bombed during World War II making it difficult for most residents to return until after reconstruction had started. Afterworld War II ended, much of what had been built in downtown Wilkes-Barre reverted back to single family homes and businesses while portions of central business district have seen renewed redevelopment throughout the 21st century into modern office buildings and residential neighborhoods
