It was founded on February 15, 1795 by Colonel George Washington and Major Robert Morris. Wilkes-Barre is the third most populous city in Luzerne County after Morristown and Scranton. In 1869, William Hargrave – who had been born in nearby Scranton – donated land to make way for a public library which would eventually be renamed The Wilkes Barre Library District. By 1897, lumberyards were being established near downtown Wilkes-Barre; these businesses would later lead to what is now the largest industrial park in Pennsylvania with over 100 factories and plants covering an area of . In 1902–1903, steel production began at what is now Coking Coal Company’s Steel Works site; this facility would remain one of largest steel producers in North America until 1984 when it closed down due to competition from cheaper foreign imports. During World War II, numerous munitions plants were located near downtown; many were destroyed by Allied bombing but some continued operation until 1991 when they closed down also due to competition from foreign imports. Today much of downtown Wilkes-Barre remains vacant although there are plans underway to redevelop some portions into mixed use buildings including office space and residential units.

Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania is a small town located in the Lehigh Valley region of the United States. The population was 13,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Allentown-Wilkes-Barre, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town lie on the south side of the White Mountains and was founded by English settlers in 1795. Wilkes Barre is named after John Wilkes (1672-1750), an MP and journalist who served as Foreign Secretary to George III during his reign. The first settler in what would become Wilkes Barre was James Forde (1712-1775). He built a cabin near where present day Bridgeport Boulevard meets Interstate 80. In 1796, Samuel Wigglesworth bought land from Forde and began to build a gristmill on the South Branch of the Susquehanna River. In 1805, he sold his mill site to Nicholas Lawrence for $8,000. At this point, Wilkes Barre had two small stores and one sawmill with 10 employees. In 1813, Gouverneur Morris became US minister to Great Britain and began negotiations for independence from that country; during these negotiations, he met with representatives from various American towns in western Pennsylvania including Wilkes Barre. After consulting with Morris about their cultural similarities – such as their love of cricket – he recommended that they form a new colony together called “New England” should it achieve independence from British rule. On July 4th, 1814, New England was established as a separate Colony within Confederation of North America but continued to use the name of Britishtown until its merger into Pennsylvanian Township in 1907

The area that became Wilkes Barre was first settled by German immigrants in the 17th century. In 1824, the town was incorporated as part of Erie Township. The population grew rapidly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, reaching its peak in 1910 with 24,722 residents. However, during World War II the city's population decreased to 14,811 due to military censorship. Afterward, Wilkes Barre experienced a significant growth again beginning in the 1970s until it reached its current size.
